Navigating the
British Virgin Islands
You do not need to be a professional captain to bareboat charter in the BVI, but you should have recent experience operating a powerboat of similar size and type to the yacht you wish to charter. We review each captain's boating experience before approving a bareboat charter and may ask about previous vessels operated, cruising experience and relevant boating certifications. Every charter also begins with an on-water checkout so you are comfortable operating your yacht before departing our Nanny Cay base.

Bareboat charter guests do not generally need a professional captain's license, but the designated captain should have recent experience operating a powerboat of similar size and type to the yacht being chartered. We review boating experience as part of the reservation process to make sure each captain is comfortable handling the yacht and cruising safely in the BVI. Certifications such as ASA courses can be helpful, but practical experience on comparable vessels is generally the most important consideration.
To be approved as a bareboat captain, you should typically have:
- Experience operating yachts of a similar size
- Confidence maneuvering in close quarters, docking and picking up mooring balls
- Basic navigation skills, including charts and markers
- Understanding of safety procedures and onboard systems
In most cases, you will be asked to provide a boating résumé outlining your experience. If we need additional information, our team will contact you to discuss your experience and determine whether the yacht is appropriate for your skill level. An on-water checkout is included at the beginning of every bareboat charter so you can become familiar with the yacht before departing the base. If you would prefer some assistance, a captain can be added to your bareboat charter. We work with experienced BVI captains who can operate the yacht while you enjoy your vacation, making this a good option for guests who love the flexibility of a bareboat but don't want to captain the yacht themselves.
