The answer depends on the yacht, number of guests, season and level of luxury, but most importantly, it is important to understand what you're comparing.
A fully crewed BVI yacht charter is very different from simply renting a boat.
Your yacht is your private accommodation, transportation, restaurant and activity platform for the week. A professional captain and chef take care of the yacht, itinerary, meals and day-to-day experience.
For most BVI crewed yachts, meals, standard beverages and many onboard water toys are included in the charter rate.
But gratuity and certain other expenses are generally additional.
Here's how to understand the true cost of a BVI crewed yacht charter.
What Does a BVI Crewed Yacht Charter Typically Cost?
Crewed-yacht rates vary considerably depending on the size and age of the yacht, number of guests, crew, amenities and whether you choose a sailing catamaran, power catamaran or motor yacht.
As a general guide, guests will find BVI crewed yacht charters across a range of budgets:

What Is Included in a BVI Crewed Yacht Charter?
One reason people sometimes struggle to compare bareboat and crewed-yacht prices is that a fully crewed charter generally includes much more than simply use of the yacht.
While inclusions vary by yacht and contract, a typical all-inclusive BVI crewed yacht charter includes:
- Private use of the yacht
- Professional captain
- Professional chef
- All meals aboard
- Standard ship's bar and beverages
- Yacht fuel for normal cruising
- Linens and towels
- Snorkeling equipment
- Many onboard water toys
- Yacht operating expenses
- Personalized itinerary planning
Before your charter, you will complete a detailed Preference Sheet where you can provide your food preferences, allergies, dietary restrictions, likes and dislikes, and any special requests. Your chef will then contact you before the charter to discuss your preferences, menu ideas and preferred types of cuisine.
Your preference sheet will also ask you to provide details on your travel style: what islands do you want to see, are you an active group who likes to get up early each day, or do you prefer to relax and take it slow?
That level of personalization is a major part of the crewed-yacht experience.
What Is NOT Usually Included?
Even on an all-inclusive yacht, there are expenses guests should budget for separately.
Depending on the yacht and charter agreement, these can include:
- Crew gratuity, recommended to be 15-20% of the charter rate
- Premium wines, champagne or specialty alcohol beyond the yacht's standard bar
- Meals and drinks guests choose to take ashore
- Dockage requested by the guests
- Shore excursions
- Spa treatments
- Taxi transportation
- Flights and travel to/from the BVI
- Certain special activities or equipment - scuba diving is not included on most charters
Your broker should explain the specific inclusions and exclusions for the yacht you're considering before you book.
How Much Should You Tip the Crew of a BVI Crewed Yacht?
In the Caribbean, the customary crew gratuity is generally 15–20% of the charter rate, based on the quality of service received.
The gratuity is normally presented to the captain at the end of the charter and distributed among the crew.

Does a More Expensive Yacht Always Mean a Better Charter?
No.
This is one of the most important things we've learned from decades of working with BVI crewed yachts.
A larger or more expensive yacht may provide:
- More space.
- Larger cabins.
- More water toys.
- Newer finishes.
- More crew.
- More amenities.
But none of those automatically guarantees a better vacation.
The crew can have a greater impact on your charter experience than an extra five or ten feet of yacht.
A talented captain who knows the BVI intimately can adapt the itinerary to weather and your group's interests.
A great chef can turn every meal into part of the vacation.
And an experienced crew that has worked together for several seasons often operates the yacht almost effortlessly.
That is why we evaluate the yacht and crew as a combination.
How Much Should Six Guests Budget?
For six guests, there can be a particularly wide range of choices.
Three couples or a family of six may not need a five-cabin yacht.
Instead, you may be able to put more of your budget toward:
- Larger cabins
- An on-deck master suite
- A newer yacht
- More outdoor space
- Better amenities
- A particularly strong captain/chef team
For example, some of our favorite BVI crewed yachts for six guests have only three guest cabins—but those cabins and the overall yacht can be substantially more luxurious than squeezing six guests onto a yacht designed primarily around maximum capacity.
For six guests, don't automatically pay for cabins you don't need.
How Much Should Eight Guests Budget?
Eight guests is one of the most common group sizes for BVI crewed yacht charters.
Four-cabin sailing catamarans and power catamarans provide many options at a wide range of price points.
At this size, we would compare:
- Cabin equality
- Yacht age
- Sailing catamaran vs. power catamaran
- Flybridge and outdoor space
- Water toys
- Crew experience
- Guest reviews
- Overall charter rate
Four couples may prioritize four relatively equal cabins.
A family with children may prioritize a larger master suite and outdoor living areas instead.
Again, the right yacht depends on who's traveling.
For a group of 8 guests, looking for 4 double cabins, there are a wide variety of great sailing and power catamaran options available from $30,000 - $50,000/wk all-inclusive.
How Much Should Ten Guests Budget?
For ten guests, the yacht selection becomes more specialized.
Five-cabin crewed yachts are generally larger and more expensive than three- or four-cabin yachts, but cabin configuration still matters.
Five cabins does not necessarily mean five equivalent accommodations.
If you're traveling with five couples, tell your broker that specifically.
We want to know whether you need:
Five private double-bed cabins for five couples
rather than simply:
A yacht that sleeps ten people.
Those are not always the same thing.
Sailing catamarans that can accommodate 10 guests generally start around $40,000/wk and the majority of popular options range from $45,000 - $65,000/wk all-inclusive.
Does a Crewed Power Catamaran Cost More Than a Sailing Catamaran?
Often, but not always.
Power catamarans typically have larger engines and consume more fuel than sailing catamarans. They may also provide different interior layouts, larger flybridges and faster cruising speeds.
Sailing catamarans remain extremely popular in the BVI because of their stability, space, efficiency and ability to sail between islands.
For some guests, sailing is an important part of the vacation.
For others, the yacht is primarily a luxury platform for exploring the islands, and a powercat may be more appealing.
We recommend choosing based on how you want to experience the BVI, rather than assuming one yacht type is automatically better.
Does It Cost More to Book Through a Yacht Charter Broker?
Generally, no.
Professional charter brokers are typically compensated through commission paid from the yacht's published charter rate. Even if you contact a yacht directly to book a charter, the rate will be the same as the rate offered by the charter broker.
That means booking through a professional broker generally does not mean paying an additional broker fee on top of the advertised charter rate.
The advantage is that a broker can compare yachts from across the charter market rather than simply selling whichever yacht happens to be owned or operated by one particular company or owner.

Not necessarily.
Suppose you have a $50,000 charter budget.
One option might be a larger or newer yacht with a relatively new crew.
Another might be slightly smaller but have an exceptional captain and chef who have worked together in the BVI for years.
Depending on your priorities, the second yacht could provide the better vacation.
We would rather match you with the right yacht and crew combination than simply recommend the largest yacht within your budget.
How Far in Advance Should I Book?
The best-known yachts and crews can book well in advance, particularly for:
- Christmas
- New Year's
- Presidents' Week
- Spring break
- Easter
- Other popular winter weeks
The New Year's week is the most popular week of the year, and many yachts book 9-12 months in advance.
If your dates are fixed and you have a particular yacht or crew in mind, earlier is better.
If your dates are flexible, your broker may have more options to work with.
How Do I Compare Two Crewed Yachts at the Same Price?
If two yachts have similar weekly rates, don't simply compare length and year.
We recommend looking at:
Crew — How experienced are they? How long have they worked together? How well do they know the BVI?
Cabins — Are they appropriate for your actual group?
Yacht layout — Where will your group spend its time?
Amenities — Which water toys and onboard features will you actually use?
Guest feedback — What have previous charter guests said?
Management — Who maintains and supports the yacht?
Overall fit — Which yacht feels right for your particular vacation?
The yacht with the longest specification sheet isn't automatically the yacht we'd choose.
Frequently Asked Questions About BVI Crewed Yacht Charter Costs
Are BVI crewed yacht charters all-inclusive?
Most are, particularly crewed catamarans, but inclusions vary by yacht. Always review the individual yacht's charter terms.
Is alcohol included?
A standard ship's bar is commonly included on all-inclusive charters. Premium or unusually expensive wines, champagne and specialty requests may be additional.
Is crew gratuity included?
Generally, no. In the Caribbean, guests should normally budget 15–20% of the charter rate for crew gratuity based on service.
Are meals included?
On most all-inclusive BVI crewed yacht charters, all meals aboard are included and prepared by your private chef.
Do children cost less?
Charter pricing is generally based on the yacht and/or number of guests rather than traditional hotel-style child rates. Individual yacht pricing policies vary.
Is a crewed yacht less expensive per person for a larger group?
It can be. When a yacht's charter cost is divided among eight or ten guests, the per-person cost can compare surprisingly well with other high-end Caribbean vacations—particularly once accommodations, meals, beverages and private transportation between islands are considered.
Finding the Right BVI Crewed Yacht for Your Budget
There is no single price that defines a luxury BVI yacht charter.
A $30,000 yacht may be perfect for one group.
Another group may find exactly what they want at $50,000.
And someone looking for a large motor yacht and a higher level of luxury may spend well over $100,000.
The goal shouldn't be to find the most expensive yacht you can afford.
It should be to find the yacht and crew that deliver the best experience for your group within a budget you're comfortable with.
