What Happens If Your Bareboat Breaks Down in the BVI?

October 16, 2026 by Alexia Lucas
Virgin Charter Yachts maintenance team providing technical support for bareboat power catamarans in the British Virgin Islands.

Planning a bareboat yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands is exciting. You're looking forward to exploring beautiful islands, snorkeling in crystal-clear water, enjoying waterfront restaurants and spending time with family and friends.

But one question guests sometimes ask is: What happens if something breaks on our yacht while we're out cruising?

It's a reasonable question, and one we believe deserves a straightforward answer.

At Virgin Charter Yachts, we'll never promise that a yacht won't experience a mechanical or equipment issue during your charter. No responsible charter company can make that guarantee, regardless of how new or well-maintained its yachts may be.

What we can promise is that our experienced local team will take your concerns seriously, respond promptly and work to resolve problems with as little disruption to your vacation as possible.

We've been operating in the British Virgin Islands since 1996, and our maintenance team is based at Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola.

We know our yachts, we know the BVI, and we're here to support you throughout your charter.

Modern Yachts Are More Complex Than Ever

Today's power catamarans are significantly more sophisticated than the yachts we were operating even ten years ago.

Modern yachts are equipped with larger engines, generators, inverters, sophisticated battery systems, watermakers, ice makers, air-conditioning systems, navigation electronics and numerous other components.

Many of these systems are electronically controlled and interconnected.

These advances have made modern yachts more comfortable, convenient and enjoyable than ever before. But they also mean there are many more components that can occasionally malfunction.

We perform extensive maintenance and proactive checks before every charter. However, even with the best preventative maintenance, a pump can fail unexpectedly, a belt can break or an electronic component can stop working without warning.

A yacht may operate perfectly during its pre-charter inspections and still experience a component failure several days later.

That's the reality of operating sophisticated machinery in a marine environment.

Our philosophy is simple: We don't promise that nothing will ever go wrong. We focus on how quickly and effectively we respond when something does.

Today's Yachts Are More Like Modern Cars and Computers

One of the biggest changes in yacht technology is how many systems are now electronically linked.

On a modern power catamaran, engines, generators, inverters, batteries, navigation displays and other equipment may communicate through sophisticated electronic control modules and onboard networks.

Sometimes an apparent equipment failure isn't actually a broken mechanical component.

A sensor may need recalibration, an electronic controller may lose communication with another system, or equipment may need a controlled reboot.

If you own a Tesla or another modern vehicle, you're probably familiar with this concept.

Occasionally, an electronic system displays an error message or stops responding, and the solution involves a reset or recalibration rather than replacing a mechanical part.

We've all experienced something similar with our personal computers. A computer can freeze or lose communication with a connected device, and restarting it restores normal operation.

Modern yachts can experience comparable issues.

For example, an inverter may stop communicating properly with another electrical component, a navigation display may require a restart, or a system may need recalibration following an electronic fault.

Sometimes the solution is a controlled reboot rather than a traditional mechanical repair.

Of course, not every problem is electronic. Pumps fail, belts break, electrical components wear out and mechanical parts occasionally need replacement.

But maintaining a modern yacht is no longer simply a matter of opening an engine compartment and reaching for a wrench.

Our technicians need to understand both the mechanical equipment and the sophisticated electrical and electronic systems aboard today's power catamarans.

This is also why we ask guests to contact our maintenance team before attempting to reset or repair equipment themselves.

Our technicians can determine whether a reset is appropriate and guide you through the correct procedure.

It's Not Unusual for a Yacht to Need a Service Call During a Charter

With the number of systems aboard today's power catamarans, an occasional service call during a charter is not unusual.

In the marine industry, we refer to this as a chase call: a member of our maintenance team travels out to a yacht during its charter to investigate or repair an issue.

A chase call doesn't necessarily mean the yacht has broken down or that your vacation has been interrupted.

It might involve replacing a pump, addressing a generator alarm, repairing an air-conditioning unit, troubleshooting an electrical component or restoring communication between electronically linked systems.

In many cases, the yacht remains fully operational and guests can continue enjoying their vacation while we arrange the repair.

Our goal is to resolve the issue as efficiently as possible while minimizing any inconvenience to our guests.

How We Stay Connected With You Throughout Your Charter

Before your charter begins, we ask the designated captain to download WhatsApp.

We create a group chat that includes your captain, our mechanical team and our customer service concierge.

Our WhatsApp groups are monitored daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This provides direct access to the people who know your yacht and can assist with any questions or concerns.

The group isn't limited to mechanical problems.

Our concierge team can also assist with marina reservations, restaurant recommendations and suggestions for things to see and do throughout the BVI.

If you experience an equipment issue, simply send a message to the group.

Our technicians will first try to identify the problem remotely.

Sometimes a tripped breaker, an incorrect switch setting, an electronic communication error or a system requiring a controlled reset is all that's involved.

If the problem cannot be resolved remotely, we'll assess the situation and coordinate an appropriate service visit when necessary.

You'll also receive emergency contact instructions for situations requiring assistance outside our normal WhatsApp monitoring hours.

What Happens If a Mechanic Is Needed? We Work Around Your Vacation Plans

If our maintenance team determines that an issue requires a service visit, one of the first things we'll ask is:

“What are your plans for the day?”

Our goal is for you to continue with your original itinerary whenever it's safe and practical to do so.

If you were planning to spend the day at Cooper Island, snorkeling at Norman Island or enjoying lunch ashore, we don't want you to change those plans simply because a technician needs to visit the yacht.

Instead, we'll coordinate a convenient location and time to meet you, taking into consideration your itinerary, the nature of the repair and the availability of our maintenance team.

And in most cases, you don't even need to stay aboard while we work.

If you're heading ashore for lunch, spending the afternoon at the beach or enjoying an excursion, we simply ask that you leave the yacht unlocked so our technicians can access the equipment they need to service.

Our team can come aboard, diagnose the issue and complete the repair while you're out enjoying your vacation.

When the work is finished, we'll update you through your WhatsApp group so you know what was done.

Of course, if a problem affects the safe operation of the yacht, we may need to coordinate your movements or address the issue before you continue cruising.

And occasionally, a particular repair may require the captain to be present.

But for many equipment problems, including air conditioning, generators, watermakers and other onboard systems, there's no reason for guests to spend their vacation sitting aboard waiting for a mechanic.

We want you enjoying the BVI, not waiting around for us.

This is one of the advantages of having our own experienced maintenance team based at Nanny Cay. We know the yachts, we know the cruising grounds, and we do our best to make service calls as convenient and unobtrusive as possible.

What If Something Breaks While You're in Anegada?

Anegada is one of the most beautiful and memorable destinations in the British Virgin Islands, famous for its spectacular beaches, lobster restaurants and relaxed island atmosphere.

However, its location makes it different from the other islands in the BVI cruising area.

Anegada is considerably farther from Tortola and the central cruising grounds, making routine technician visits impractical.

Virgin Charter Yachts does not dispatch technicians to Anegada for routine mechanical or equipment service calls.

This applies to issues such as generators, air conditioning, watermakers, ice makers and other nonemergency equipment problems.

If you experience an issue while visiting Anegada, please contact our maintenance team through your WhatsApp group.

We'll troubleshoot the problem remotely whenever possible.

If a technician is needed, we'll ask about your plans for the following day and arrange to meet you when you return to North Sound on Virgin Gorda or at another suitable destination on your itinerary.

For example, if you're enjoying a day on Anegada and experience an air-conditioning problem, we'll try to troubleshoot it remotely.

If the issue requires a technician, you can continue enjoying your planned activities on Anegada, and we'll coordinate a repair visit when you return to North Sound or another convenient location.

You don't need to cut your Anegada visit short for a routine equipment issue.

What About a Genuine Emergency in Anegada?

A genuine emergency is different from a routine mechanical problem.

If your yacht experiences a fire, is taking on water or faces another immediate threat to life or the vessel, the priority is to protect everyone aboard and obtain emergency assistance.

Contact the appropriate maritime emergency services immediately using your VHF radio and follow the emergency procedures provided during your charter briefing.

Notify Virgin Charter Yachts as soon as it is safe to do so.

We will help coordinate the appropriate emergency response and assistance.

Emergency situations are handled according to the circumstances and available rescue resources, rather than our normal service-call arrangements.

For routine equipment issues, however, our policy is to provide remote assistance while you're in Anegada and arrange any necessary technician visit when you return to the main cruising area.

For more information about planning your route, see our BVI Charter Itinerary for First-Time Visitors.

What If the Problem Affects the Yacht's Engines or Ability to Operate?

Some systems are essential to operating a yacht safely.

Under our bareboat charter agreement, these necessary systems include engines, transmissions, batteries and battery charging systems.

If one of these systems fails, we prioritize restoring the yacht to safe operating condition as quickly as possible.

Our charter agreement provides an eight-hour repair allowance after notification for necessary operating-system repairs, with specific compensation provisions for qualifying lost cruising time beyond the contractual allowance.

It's important to contact our team as soon as you become aware of a problem.

This allows us to begin troubleshooting and coordinate assistance without unnecessary delays.

In some cases, the problem may be resolved remotely or with a relatively straightforward repair.

In others, more extensive work or replacement parts may be necessary.

Our priority is always to restore the yacht to safe operating condition as quickly as reasonably possible.

You can learn more about preparing to operate a bareboat yacht in our BVI Bareboat Charter Guide.

What If the Generator or Air Conditioning Stops Working?

Generators and air conditioning are important comfort features aboard our power catamarans, particularly during warm Caribbean evenings.

If your generator or air conditioning stops working, please contact us.

We absolutely make service calls for generator and air-conditioning problems within our normal service area.

Our maintenance team will troubleshoot the issue and, when necessary, coordinate a technician to come to the yacht.

Sometimes the solution is straightforward, such as resetting an electronic controller or addressing a minor component problem.

Other times, a replacement part or more extensive repair may be required.

Whenever practical, we'll work around your plans for the day so you can continue enjoying your vacation while our team addresses the issue.

If you're in Anegada, we'll assist remotely and arrange any necessary service call when you return to North Sound or another suitable destination.

Our charter agreement contains specific provisions addressing compensation for qualifying generator and air-conditioning failures.

However, those contractual provisions are separate from our commitment to assist our guests.

Whether or not an issue qualifies for compensation, our first priority is to get the equipment working again.

What If the Watermaker Stops Working?

All of our bareboat power catamarans are equipped with watermakers, and we flush and prepare these systems before every charter.

However, watermakers are complex pieces of equipment that can occasionally develop problems without warning.

If your watermaker stops working, please contact our maintenance team.

We'll first try to troubleshoot the problem remotely.

We also provide watermaker service calls in certain areas close to our base.

We can arrange watermaker service calls around Tortola, Norman Island, Peter Island and Cooper Island.

We do not dispatch technicians specifically for watermaker repairs to Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke or Anegada.

If your watermaker fails while you're in one of those locations, we'll still help troubleshoot remotely and advise you where to replenish your freshwater tanks.

If your itinerary subsequently brings you back to an area where we provide watermaker service, we can assess whether a repair visit is practical.

Virgin Charter Yachts covers the necessary cost of replenishing freshwater when a watermaker fails during your charter.

Our charter agreement does not provide additional charter compensation for watermaker failures because freshwater can be replenished at locations throughout the BVI.

But that contractual provision doesn't mean we won't try to repair the watermaker.

We understand that guests appreciate having a functioning watermaker, and we make reasonable efforts to restore it within our service area.

What About Smaller Equipment Problems?

Not every malfunction affects the yacht's ability to operate.

Occasionally, equipment such as a refrigerator, ice maker, navigation accessory or other onboard convenience may stop working.

We ask guests to report these issues promptly so our team can assess them.

Some problems can be resolved remotely, while others may require a technician or replacement part.

In certain situations, the most practical solution may be to arrange an alternative rather than interrupt your itinerary for a nonessential repair.

The appropriate response depends on the equipment involved, the circumstances and the terms of your charter agreement.

Our goal is always to find a reasonable solution that allows you to enjoy as much of your vacation as possible.

What Should You Do If Something Goes Wrong While Underway?

If you experience a mechanical problem while cruising, your first responsibility as captain is the safety of everyone aboard.

If the yacht is in immediate danger, follow the appropriate emergency procedures and contact emergency services using your VHF radio.

For a nonemergency mechanical issue, we recommend the following:

  1. Make sure everyone is safe. Assess your surroundings, the yacht's position and whether you can continue operating safely.

  2. Contact Virgin Charter Yachts promptly. Use your WhatsApp group or the contact instructions provided during your briefing.

  3. Explain the problem clearly. Tell us what equipment is affected, what symptoms you're experiencing and where the yacht is located. Photographs of warning messages or equipment displays can be helpful.

  4. Follow our team's troubleshooting instructions. We may ask you to check a switch, breaker, alarm or another straightforward item. If an electronic system needs a reset or recalibration, we'll explain the appropriate procedure.

  5. Don't attempt unauthorized mechanical repairs or electrical resets. Some systems are interconnected, and an incorrect reset can affect other equipment.

  6. Keep us informed. If conditions change or another issue develops, update the team.

If the yacht cannot safely continue, we'll help determine the appropriate next steps.

Remember that VCY's normal charter rules prohibit anchoring. Emergency anchoring may be necessary for immediate safety, but you should notify our team as soon as it is safe to do so.

What Happens Before You Leave Nanny Cay?

One of the best ways to prevent unnecessary problems during a charter is to make sure everyone understands how the yacht operates before departure.

At Virgin Charter Yachts, our guests receive a comprehensive yacht orientation and chart briefing at Nanny Cay.

We'll explain the operation of the yacht's major systems, including the engines, generator, air conditioning, watermaker, electrical equipment and other features specific to your yacht.

We also explain how to contact our team during your charter.

For our Platinum yachts, a mandatory on-water checkout is included in the charter.

Our captain takes the yacht off the dock, and the guest skipper practices maneuvering, including handling the yacht at the fuel dock.

The captain also accompanies the yacht to Norman Island, where the skipper practices picking up a mooring ball before continuing independently.

The goal is for you to leave feeling comfortable operating your yacht and knowing exactly where to turn if you have a question.

For more information about preparing for your charter, visit our BVI Charter Planning Guide.

Our Contractual Policies and Our Commitment to Service

Like every professional charter operator, Virgin Charter Yachts has a charter agreement that explains the responsibilities of both the company and our guests.

It also establishes how different equipment failures are handled and when compensation may apply.

These provisions are important because yachts contain many systems, and not every malfunction has the same impact on a vacation.

An engine failure that prevents a yacht from operating is very different from an ice maker that stops producing ice.

Our agreement distinguishes between essential operating systems, generator and air-conditioning equipment, watermakers and other onboard conveniences.

But we want guests to understand something important:

Our contractual compensation policies do not define the limits of our customer service.

We don't decide whether to help a guest simply by asking whether the malfunction qualifies for compensation.

We assess the problem, determine what assistance is appropriate and work to resolve it as quickly as reasonably possible.

Sometimes that means talking a guest through a simple procedure over WhatsApp.

Sometimes it means sending a technician to the yacht.

And occasionally it means finding a practical alternative when a repair cannot be completed immediately.

Our objective is to minimize the impact of equipment problems and help our guests continue enjoying their time in the BVI.

Why Our Local Maintenance Team Makes a Difference

Virgin Charter Yachts is a family-owned charter company that has operated in the British Virgin Islands since 1996.

We're based at Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola, with our own experienced maintenance team.

Our technicians work with the yachts in our fleet every day. They know the individual boats, their equipment and their operating histories.

That familiarity can be particularly valuable when diagnosing an issue remotely or determining what parts and tools might be needed for a service call.

We also know the local cruising grounds and understand the practicalities of reaching yachts at different locations throughout the BVI.

Unlike companies limited to a single manufacturer, our bareboat fleet includes Aventura, Leopard, Aquila and Fountaine Pajot power catamarans.

Our team has experience maintaining the different systems and equipment found across these brands.

You can learn more about what makes Virgin Charter Yachts different from other BVI bareboat charter companies.

No charter company can eliminate every mechanical problem.

Even a brand-new yacht can experience an unexpected component failure.

What matters is having an experienced, responsive team that takes the problem seriously and works to resolve it.

That's the standard we strive to deliver at Virgin Charter Yachts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first if my bareboat yacht breaks down in the BVI?

First, make sure everyone aboard is safe. If there is immediate danger, follow emergency procedures and contact emergency services. For a nonemergency equipment issue, contact Virgin Charter Yachts through the WhatsApp group or the contact information provided at your briefing.

Does Virgin Charter Yachts provide mechanical assistance during a charter?

Yes. Our team helps troubleshoot problems remotely and coordinates technical assistance when necessary. We have our own maintenance staff based at Nanny Cay on Tortola.

Can a mechanic come to our yacht while we're cruising?

Yes. We regularly make chase calls to yachts during charters when service is needed. The timing and arrangements depend on the issue, the yacht's location, weather conditions and available resources.

Usually not. When a service call is needed, we'll ask about your plans for the day and try to arrange the visit at a location convenient for you.

In many cases, you can go ashore for lunch, enjoy the beach or continue your planned activities while our technicians work aboard.

We simply ask that you leave the yacht unlocked so our team can access the equipment, and we'll update you when the repair is complete.

If the issue affects safe operation or requires the captain's presence, we may need to make different arrangements.

Does Virgin Charter Yachts send mechanics to Anegada?

We do not dispatch technicians to Anegada for routine mechanical or equipment service calls.

We'll help troubleshoot remotely and arrange to meet you in North Sound or another suitable destination when you return to the main cruising area.

For genuine emergencies involving immediate danger to life or the vessel, emergency response procedures apply.

Can an electronic reset fix a problem on a modern yacht?

Sometimes. Modern yachts have electronically linked systems that may experience communication errors or require a controlled reset or recalibration, much like modern cars and computers.

However, guests should contact our maintenance team before resetting equipment so that the correct and safe procedure can be followed.

What happens if the yacht's engine fails?

Contact us immediately. Engine and transmission failures are treated as necessary operating-system issues under our charter agreement.

Our team prioritizes restoring safe operation, and the contract provides an eight-hour repair allowance and specific provisions for qualifying lost cruising time.

We'll help troubleshoot the problem and direct you to a suitable place to replenish freshwater if needed.

We can also arrange watermaker service calls around Tortola, Norman Island, Peter Island and Cooper Island.

We do not dispatch watermaker-specific service calls to Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke or Anegada.

Will we receive a refund if something breaks?

Not necessarily. Compensation depends on the equipment involved, the circumstances and the provisions of your charter agreement.

Reporting the problem promptly is essential.

Can we contact Virgin Charter Yachts while we're out cruising?

Absolutely. Your captain is added to a WhatsApp group with our mechanical and concierge teams, monitored from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

You'll also receive emergency contact instructions for situations outside those hours.
