One of the most common questions we hear from guests is: When is the best time of year to charter a yacht in the British Virgin Islands?
The answer depends on what you are looking for.
The BVI is a year-round tropical destination, and temperatures remain remarkably consistent throughout the year. What changes more noticeably from season to season are the trade winds, number of boats on the water, charter rates, yacht availability and hurricane risk.
After operating yacht charters from Tortola since 1996, we have experienced every season in the BVI. Some guests want lively beach bars and consistent sailing winds. Others would happily trade the winter crowds for flat seas, quiet mooring fields and warm summer water.
Here is how we look at the year when helping our guests choose their charter dates.
Quick Answer: When Is the Best Time to Charter in the BVI?
For most guests, December through July offers excellent BVI charter conditions, but different months suit different types of charter guests.
December through April is peak season. The trade winds are generally at their most consistent, which makes this period particularly popular with sailors. The islands are lively, the weather is beautiful and there are more boats on the water.
May and June are two of our favorite months, particularly for powercat charters. The trade winds tend to become lighter, the water is warm, there are considerably fewer boats and lighter winds can mean wonderfully flat seas.
July can still be an excellent time to charter, especially for families traveling during summer vacation.
August through October is a very different season. Many fully crewed yachts are not available at all because they are hauled out or placed into hurricane storage due to insurance requirements. Crews also commonly take their annual holidays during this period.
November is when the BVI begins coming back to life for the new charter season, with activity increasing significantly around Thanksgiving.
What Is BVI Weather Like Throughout the Year?
One of the great things about the British Virgin Islands is the consistency of the weather.
Daytime temperatures are generally in the 80s throughout the year, the Caribbean water stays warm, and the BVI does not experience a true monsoon or prolonged rainy season.
Brief tropical showers can occur at any time of year, but they often pass quickly. When choosing your charter dates, the bigger seasonal differences are usually wind, crowds, yacht availability and hurricane risk, rather than dramatic changes in temperature.
The trade winds are generally strongest and most consistent from December through April, which is one reason the winter and early spring months are so popular with sailors.
From May through July, the trade winds tend to become lighter.
For sailors looking forward to spending their vacation under sail, that may make the winter months more appealing. For our bareboat powercat guests, however, lighter winds can actually be an advantage.
A powercat doesn't depend on the wind, and lighter conditions can produce beautiful days with very flat seas. That can make cruising between the islands exceptionally comfortable and create wonderful conditions for snorkeling, swimming, paddleboarding and other watersports.
It's one of the reasons May - July are some of our favorite months for a BVI powercat charter.
January – Peak BVI Charter Season
January is one of the most popular months to charter in the BVI.
Temperatures are comfortable, trade winds are generally consistent and the islands are fully open for the season. After the Christmas and New Year's rush, the BVI remains lively throughout the month.
Expect popular anchorages, restaurants and beach bars to be busy. If you want a particular yacht or have fixed travel dates, booking well in advance is a good idea.
Best for: Excellent weather, consistent trade winds and guests who enjoy the energy of peak season.
February – Beautiful Weather and High Demand
February is another classic BVI charter month.
The combination of warm Caribbean temperatures and reliable trade winds makes February especially attractive to travelers escaping winter in the United States and Canada.
It is also firmly within high season, so don't expect empty mooring fields or low-season pricing.
For sailors in particular, February offers the type of consistent trade-wind conditions that have helped make the BVI one of the world's great sailing destinations.
Best for: Winter escapes, sailing and classic BVI charter conditions.
March – Peak Season Continues
March offers many of the same advantages as January and February: warm temperatures, consistent trade winds and plenty happening throughout the islands.
It is also one of the busier times of year in the BVI, particularly around spring break and major sailing events.
For guests who enjoy an active atmosphere both on and off the water, March can be fantastic.
Best for: Sailing, beautiful weather and a lively BVI atmosphere.
April – Beautiful, but Often Busier Than People Expect
April is an excellent month to be in the BVI, but it can be surprisingly busy.
Spring break and Easter travel bring a significant number of visitors to the islands, and popular anchorages, restaurants and beach bars can be lively.
Weather and water conditions are generally excellent, however, making April a very popular charter month.
If your priority is avoiding crowds rather than traveling during school vacation, consider moving your trip a little later into May or June.
Best for: Families traveling over spring break and guests who enjoy the high-season atmosphere.
May – One of the BVI's Best-Kept Secrets
By May, the BVI begins to quiet down.
There are generally fewer charter yachts on the water than during winter and early spring, which can make finding moorings easier and popular destinations feel considerably less crowded.
The trade winds also tend to become lighter.
For our powercat guests, this can be an ideal combination. You don't need the wind to travel between islands, and lighter winds can mean flatter seas and very comfortable cruising.
Temperatures are warm, the water is beautiful, and charter rates can also become more attractive as we move away from peak season.
May offers a great combination of good weather, fewer crowds and excellent charter value.
Best for: Powercat charters, fewer crowds, warm water and excellent overall value.
June – One of Our Favorite Months for a BVI Powercat Charter
If you ask our team when we like being on the water, June is always high on the list.
The winter crowds have disappeared, the water is wonderfully warm and the trade winds are typically lighter than during the winter sailing season.
For our powercat guests, that's often a benefit rather than a drawback.
A powercat doesn't need wind to get you from island to island, and lighter winds can produce wonderfully calm days and flat seas. That makes June particularly enjoyable for cruising, snorkeling, swimming, paddleboarding and simply spending time on the water.
There are also significantly fewer yachts competing for popular moorings, restaurants and beach bars, and charter rates can be more attractive than during the peak winter months.
June 1 officially marks the beginning of Atlantic hurricane season, but conditions don't suddenly change on June 1. Tropical weather is something we monitor throughout the season.
For guests who aren't tied to winter or spring travel dates, June is one of the first months we suggest considering for a BVI powercat charter.
Best for: Powercats, flat seas, fewer crowds, warm water and excellent charter value.
July – Summer in the Islands
July is warmer and quieter, but it can still be a wonderful time to charter.
It is particularly popular with families who need to travel during summer vacation. The islands are generally less crowded than during winter, although events surrounding the BVI's summer festival season can bring periods of additional activity.
Trade winds are typically lighter than during winter, and you may encounter occasional tropical showers.
For powercat guests, however, the combination of warm water, lighter winds and fewer boats can make July very enjoyable.
Best for: Families, powercat charters and summer travelers who prefer quieter cruising.
August Through October – A Very Different Charter Season
August marks the beginning of the BVI's quietest period, and by September and October the charter industry looks very different from it does during the main season.
These months fall within the most active portion of Atlantic hurricane season. They are also traditionally when much of the BVI marine and tourism industry slows down.
This is particularly important if you're considering a fully crewed yacht charter.
Many crewed yachts are simply not available from August through October. Insurance requirements may require yachts to be hauled out of the water or placed into hurricane storage, and many professional crews use this period for their annual vacation before returning for the new charter season.
Charter companies also use the quieter period for annual yacht maintenance, haul-outs and larger projects that are difficult to accomplish during the busy charter season.
Some bareboat yachts may remain available depending on the operator and insurance requirements, but the overall selection is considerably smaller. Some restaurants, resorts and other tourism businesses also close temporarily during this period.
This doesn't mean it rains every day. There can be long stretches of beautiful Caribbean weather. The issue is the increased possibility of tropical systems and the reduced availability of yachts and shoreside services.
For most guests — particularly first-time BVI visitors — we recommend choosing another time of year if your schedule allows.
Best for: Experienced BVI travelers with exceptional flexibility rather than most first-time charter guests.
November – The BVI Comes Back to Life
November is the transition back into charter season.
Yachts return from hurricane storage and annual maintenance, crews come back to the islands, restaurants and resorts reopen, and the BVI starts getting ready for another busy winter.
Early November can still be relatively quiet, while Thanksgiving week marks a noticeable increase in demand.
For guests who want to visit before the winter crowds arrive, November can be an excellent option.
Best for: Shoulder-season travelers and guests looking to arrive ahead of peak winter season.
December – From Quiet Islands to Holiday Peak Season
December is really two very different charter periods.
Early December can be a fantastic time to visit. The islands are open for the season, conditions are generally excellent and crowds haven't yet reached their holiday peak.
Then Christmas and New Year's arrive.
The festive period is one of the most sought-after charter periods of the entire year. The BVI is lively, restaurants and beach bars are busy, and the most desirable yachts — particularly fully crewed yachts — can book far in advance.
If you're considering a Christmas or New Year's charter, yacht selection is one of the biggest reasons to book early.
Best for: Early-season travel during the first half of December or an energetic Caribbean holiday over Christmas and New Year's.
Does the Best Time Differ for Sailing, Powercat and Crewed Charters?
Absolutely — and this is one of the most important things to consider when choosing your dates.
Sailing Charters
December through April is especially popular with sailors because the BVI's trade winds tend to be strongest and most consistent.
For guests who are coming specifically to sail, those reliable winter trade winds are part of the attraction.
Bareboat Powercat Charters
May through July can be fantastic for powercats.
Powercats don't rely on the wind, so lighter trade winds aren't a disadvantage. In fact, they can mean flatter seas and very comfortable cruising between the islands.
Combine that with fewer yachts on the water, warm Caribbean water and potentially better seasonal rates, and May and June in particular are two of our favorite periods for a BVI powercat charter.
Fully Crewed Yacht Charters
For crewed yacht guests, yacht availability becomes an important seasonal consideration.
December through July generally provides the greatest selection.
From August through October, many crewed yachts leave charter service completely because of hurricane-season insurance requirements, storage and annual maintenance. Their crews also frequently take their annual holidays during this period.
If you have a particular crewed yacht or crew in mind, availability may therefore be just as important as weather when deciding when to travel.
What Months Would We Choose?
If your schedule is completely flexible and you're looking for a powercat charter, May, June and July are hard to beat.
You get many of the things people come to the BVI for — warm Caribbean water, beautiful weather, snorkeling, beaches and island hopping — but with fewer yachts around you and often very calm seas.
For sailors who want the BVI's famous trade winds, January through March offer the classic winter sailing experience.
Families tied to school schedules shouldn't hesitate to consider June or July.
For a fully crewed charter, December through July gives you the broadest choice of yachts, although the most popular holiday and winter dates should be booked well in advance.
And if you're looking for the full holiday atmosphere, Christmas and New Year's in the BVI are unforgettable.
There really isn't one single "best" month. The better question is: What kind of BVI experience do you want?
How Far in Advance Should You Book a BVI Yacht Charter?
There isn't one rule that applies to every charter.
How early you should book depends on your travel dates, group size, preferred yacht and how flexible you are.
Christmas, New Year's, Presidents' Week and popular spring-break periods can book well in advance, particularly for larger bareboat powercats and the most sought-after fully crewed yachts.
The same applies if you need a particular cabin configuration — for example, a five- or six-cabin powercat for a larger group.
If your dates are flexible or you're traveling during May, June or early summer, there is often considerably more availability.
The most important consideration is simple: if you have a particular yacht, cabin configuration or travel week you want, book when you find the right option rather than waiting for a theoretical "best" time to book.
Choosing the Right Time for Your BVI Yacht Charter
After 30 years of chartering yachts in the British Virgin Islands, we've learned that the "best" time to visit isn't the same for everyone.
A sailor looking for steady trade winds may love February.
A powercat guest might prefer June, when the winds are lighter, the seas can be beautifully flat and there are fewer boats competing for moorings.
A family may need to travel in July.
And a crewed-yacht guest may care less about the wind than finding the right yacht and crew for their group.
