Best BVI Restaurants & Beach Bars: Our Yacht Charter Favorites

One of the best parts of a BVI yacht charter is that you can spend the morning snorkeling, the afternoon on a beach and the evening having dinner overlooking the water on another island.

After 30 years of operating yacht charters in the British Virgin Islands, we’ve developed plenty of favorites. This isn’t intended to be a directory of every restaurant and beach bar in the BVI. These are the places we actually recommend to our charter guests, along with when we think they’re worth visiting and what we like about them.

And before we get to the restaurants, there is one piece of advice we give our guests that can make the difference between a great evening and a frustrating one.

Our #1 BVI Dining Tip: Make Your Reservation Earlier Than You Think

Island time is real in the BVI.

Dining here is part of the experience, but restaurant service is generally much more relaxed than many of our U.S. guests are accustomed to. A 6:00 PM dinner reservation does not necessarily mean you’ll be eating at 6:15. On a busy evening, you may be lucky to have your entrées by 7:00.

Our advice is simple: make your reservation about an hour earlier than you think you need it.

If your group wants to be eating dinner around 8:00 PM, don’t make a 7:00 or 7:30 reservation and expect the same timing you might at home.

Order a drink, enjoy the view and don’t schedule your evening too tightly. You’re in the Caribbean, relax and go with the flow!

Should You Eat Ashore on a Bareboat or Crewed Yacht Charter?

Our advice is actually quite different depending on the type of yacht you’re chartering.

Bareboat Guests

For bareboat guests, eating ashore can be a big part of the vacation.

You don’t necessarily want to provision and cook every meal aboard, and the BVI makes it easy to combine nights on the yacht with dinners at restaurants throughout the islands.

We generally recommend planing for breakfast and some lunches on board but then eating out for dinners ashore.  While the galleys of the bareboats are stocked with all the appliances you need, it is a lot of work to prepare a full dinner for 8-12 guests after a long day in the sun.  Dining out is also a big part of experiencing the BVI, so we find that most guests plan to enjoy most dinners on land. 

Fully Crewed Yacht Guests

If you’re on a fully crewed yacht, we look at restaurants differently.

The food prepared by a good charter chef aboard your yacht will normally be higher quality and prepared to a higher standard than what you’ll find at most BVI restaurants. Your chef has also customized the week’s menus specifically around your group’s preferences.

So we generally don’t recommend leaving your yacht because you’re looking for a better meal.

Go ashore for an experience or atmosphere that your yacht can’t replicate.

If you’re having an amazing afternoon at White Bay, you might prefer to stay on the beach, have lunch at Hendo’s Hideout and enjoy another couple of hours ashore rather than returning to the yacht for lunch.

After exploring The Baths, an evening at CocoMaya can be worth going ashore for the atmosphere, setting and sunset.

And on Anegada, having freshly grilled lobster on the beach is an experience that simply can’t be replicated aboard your yacht.

For crewed-charter guests, that’s how we recommend choosing restaurants: pick the places that add something special to your BVI experience.

Our Favorite BVI Restaurants & Beach Bars at a Glance

Norman Island: Willy T & Pirates Bight

Norman Island is one of the most popular stops on a BVI yacht charter, and you have two very different options ashore.

Willy T

The famous floating Willy T is one of those BVI experiences everyone has heard about.

It can get a little crazy after dark, but don’t overlook it as a lunch stop.

The Willy T catches its own fresh fish, and the mahi sandwich is one of our favorites in the BVI. It’s a fun place to stop during the day for lunch and drinks without necessarily committing to the late-night Willy T experience.

If you do go after dark, expect a considerably livelier atmosphere.

Pirates Bight

For dinner on Norman Island, Pirates Bight is our choice.

Pirate Night is particularly fun and turns dinner into more of an experience than simply a meal ashore.

Peter Island: Drake’s Steakhouse

If you’re looking for a more upscale dinner, Drake’s Steakhouse at Peter Island Resort is a very different experience from the BVI’s casual beach bars.

It’s a good choice for guests who want one nicer evening ashore during their charter, particularly if Peter Island already fits naturally into the itinerary.

Cooper Island: Eco-Conscious Dining & an Incredible Rum Bar

Cooper Island Beach Club is one of our favorite easy charter stops because you can combine snorkeling, time ashore, drinks and dinner without making the day complicated.

The restaurant has a strong sustainability focus and grows some of its produce on site.

And if you like rum, don’t miss the Cooper Island Rum Bar. With more than 400 rums, it’s a destination in its own right for rum lovers.

Cooper is a great example of a place where the entire stop works together—water activities, beach, drinks and dinner.

Virgin Gorda & North Sound: The BVI’s Biggest Choice of Dining Experiences

Virgin Gorda and North Sound have so many good options that you could easily incorporate several into a week’s charter.

The key is choosing them for different experiences rather than trying to visit everything.

Hog Heaven: Lunch With a View

We particularly like Hog Heaven for lunch.

The BBQ is good, but the real reason to go is the incredible view over North Sound.

This is a casual stop, and we’d choose it during the day when you can fully appreciate the view rather than using it as one of your nicer dinners.

Saba Rock: Dinner & Tarpon Feeding

Saba Rock is almost always a hit.

We like it for dinner, and arriving in time for the 5:00 PM tarpon feeding turns it into an experience rather than simply another meal.

The setting in North Sound is quintessential BVI and works for couples, groups and families.

Leverick Bay: Particularly Fun With Kids

Leverick Bay is a very popular stop during the week because you can combine casual beach dining with entertainment.

The Michael Beans “Happy Arrr” pirate show is great fun, particularly for families with children.

Leverick is also known for its beach BBQ and Moko Jumbie stilt walkers on scheduled evenings.

Schedules can change seasonally, so check the current entertainment schedule when planning your charter rather than assuming a particular show will happen on a specific night.

Bitter End Yacht Club

Bitter End Yacht Club is another North Sound favorite because there are several dining choices and the entire property is fun to explore from a yacht.

The options are generally more casual, including a popular pizza spot, making Bitter End an easy choice when everyone in the group wants something different.

Ikigai at Biras Creek: Something Completely Different

For a genuinely high-end dining experience, Ikigai at Biras Creek is at the other end of the spectrum.

It’s expensive, but the quality and experience are exceptional. The Japanese-influenced omakase-style dining makes it very different from the typical Caribbean restaurant experience.

This is the choice for someone specifically looking for a special fine-dining evening rather than a casual night ashore.

CocoMaya: Our Top Virgin Gorda Recommendation

If we had to choose one dinner ashore on Virgin Gorda, CocoMaya would be our top recommendation.

A great way to plan the day is to explore The Baths in the morning, enjoy the island during the afternoon and then have dinner at CocoMaya.

The beachfront setting, atmosphere and sunsets make it particularly worthwhile for crewed-yacht guests because you’re going ashore for an experience—not simply because you need somewhere to eat.

Nova at Oil Nut Bay

Nova at Oil Nut Bay is another excellent option for either lunch or dinner.

The setting is beautiful and it can be a good choice for guests who want to incorporate the Oil Nut Bay/North Sound area into their day.

Access and reservations should be confirmed in advance.

Anegada: Come for the Lobster

If there is one place where we particularly recommend eating ashore, it’s Anegada.

Anegada is famous for its lobster, and eating freshly grilled lobster on the beach is part of the experience of visiting the island.

Potter’s by the Sea

For an authentic Anegada experience, we love Potter’s by the Sea.

The lobster is grilled in old drums right by the beach. The setting is casual, local and exactly what many guests picture when they think about dinner on a Caribbean island.

For a crewed-yacht guest with an excellent chef aboard, this is precisely the kind of meal ashore we recommend—not necessarily because your chef can’t prepare lobster, but because your yacht can’t recreate the experience of having it grilled for you on an Anegada beach.

Wonky Dog

For guests looking for something a little more upscale, The Wonky Dog is another excellent Anegada dinner choice.

It offers a different atmosphere from Potter’s, so which one we recommend depends on the experience your group wants.

Don’t Miss an Anegada Beach-Bar Crawl

Anegada isn’t just about dinner.

One of our favorite ways to explore the island is to rent Mokes or scooters, or arrange a safari taxi, and spend part of the day visiting the beach bars.

Three of our favorite stops are:

• Cow Wreck Beach
• Tipsy’s
• Big Bamboo

Don’t rush it. The fun is in exploring the island, stopping when somewhere looks good and spending some time on Anegada’s incredible beaches.

Jost Van Dyke: Choose Your Stop Based on the Experience

Jost Van Dyke has so many famous bars that it makes more sense to divide our recommendations by location.

Diamond Cay

At Diamond Cay, we like B-Line Bar for drinks and BBQ.

Foxy’s Taboo is another popular stop in the same area and easy to incorporate while exploring this end of Jost Van Dyke.

Great Harbour

In Great Harbour, Foxy’s is the institution.

We particularly like Foxy’s for drinks and the atmosphere. It’s one of those places you should experience at least once on a BVI trip.

For food in Great Harbour, we prefer Tipsy Shark.

White Bay

White Bay is one of the most famous beach-bar destinations in the Caribbean, and during the day it is easy to spend hours moving between the beach and different bars.

For food, Hendo’s Hideout is one of our favorites.

For drinks, start with the famous Soggy Dollar Bar, home of the Painkiller.

Other White Bay favorites include:

• Ivan’s Stress Free Bar
• Gertrude’s
• Coco Loco’s

You don’t need to make White Bay complicated. Swim, enjoy the beach, have lunch, try a Painkiller and see where the afternoon takes you.

Important for Virgin Charter Yachts Bareboat Guests

Virgin Charter Yachts bareboat yachts are not permitted to enter or moor in White Bay.

That doesn’t mean you can’t visit White Bay. You can secure the yacht at an approved location on Jost Van Dyke and travel to White Bay from there.

Do You Need Restaurant Reservations in the BVI?

For popular dinner restaurants, particularly during the busier charter season, yes—we recommend reservations.

But remember our advice from the beginning of this guide:

Book earlier than you think you need to.

If eating at 8:00 PM matters to you, don’t assume a 7:30 reservation means you’ll be eating at 8:00.

For bareboat guests, our VCY team can help with restaurant suggestions and planning.

On a fully crewed charter, your captain and crew can assist with reservations and work restaurant visits into the itinerary.

Don’t Plan Every Meal Before Your Charter

Just as we don’t recommend over-scheduling your BVI itinerary, we wouldn’t schedule every lunch and dinner before you arrive.

Pick the experiences that matter to you.

Maybe that’s a sunset dinner at CocoMaya, lobster on the beach in Anegada, the tarpon feeding at Saba Rock, Pirate Night at Norman Island or spending an entire afternoon at White Bay without worrying about getting back to the yacht for lunch.

Leave room for the unexpected.

You may arrive somewhere and decide you don’t want to leave—or your plans may change because of weather, sea conditions or something your captain or the VCY team recommends that day.

After 30 years in the BVI, we’ve learned that some of the best charter days are the ones that don’t go exactly according to plan.
