Norman Island BVI Charter Guide

Norman Island is one of our favorite first stops on a BVI yacht charter — and for many Virgin Charter Yachts guests, it is exactly where their vacation begins.

Located just across the Sir Francis Drake Channel from Tortola, Norman Island combines a large protected mooring field, excellent snorkeling, a beautiful beach, Pirate’s Bight restaurant and the legendary Willy T floating bar.

Its location makes it particularly convenient for your first night. Rather than spending hours underway immediately after leaving the charter base, you can settle into The Bight, swim, have a drink and start enjoying the islands.

The following morning is a perfect time to snorkel The Caves or The Indians before continuing east toward Peter Island, Cooper Island and Virgin Gorda.

The Bight — Our Favorite First Night

The Bight is Norman Island’s main harbor and one of the largest and most protected mooring fields in the BVI.

That combination is exactly why we like Norman Island for the first night of a charter.

Most BVI charters begin on a Friday or Saturday because of guests’ travel schedules. After arriving in the BVI, completing your yacht briefing and getting everyone settled aboard, most groups don’t want a long passage to their first destination.

Norman Island is also where Virgin Charter Yachts conducts our first-day on-water checkouts. When an on-water checkout is required, our captain travels with you from Nanny Cay across to Norman Island, allowing you to become comfortable handling the yacht underway, maneuvering and picking up a mooring. Since you’re already in The Bight at the end of the checkout, most guests naturally choose to secure a mooring and stay for their first evening.

Even for guests who don’t require an on-water checkout, Norman Island is close enough to Tortola to make that first trip easy, while still immediately feeling like you’ve started your vacation.

Another advantage is the size of the mooring field. The moorings at Norman Island are first come, first served rather than reservable, but there are hundreds of them.

Once you’re secured for the evening, you’re within an easy dinghy ride of both Pirate’s Bight and the Willy T.

VCY TIP: Don’t worry that you can’t reserve a mooring at Norman Island. The Bight has a very large mooring field, which is one of the reasons we like it so much for the first night.

The Willy T — A BVI Institution

You really can’t write a guide to Norman Island without talking about the Willy T.

This famous floating bar and restaurant has been part of the BVI charter experience for decades, and during the day we think it’s fun for almost everyone.

That’s part of what makes the Willy T such a uniquely BVI experience. You may see people arriving in a dinghy from a tiny old monohull while, a few minutes later, guests from a 200-foot megayacht arrive aboard their luxury tender. Everyone ends up at the same floating bar.

We particularly like the Willy T for lunch. They catch their own fresh fish, and the mahi sandwich is one of our favorites in the islands.

Friday and Saturday can be especially lively because so many charters are beginning their week.

The atmosphere changes as the evening progresses, however. Once the sun goes down, the Willy T can become considerably rowdier.

For adults looking for a fun night out, that may be exactly what you’re looking for. Families and groups wanting a quieter evening may prefer to enjoy the Willy T during the day and head to Pirate’s Bight for dinner.

Pirate’s Bight — Dinner on the Beach

For a completely different Norman Island experience, head ashore to Pirate’s Bight.

The restaurant sits directly on the beach in The Bight and is a great choice for dinner, particularly for families or groups that want a relaxed evening ashore.

One of our favorite nights is Pirate Night, which makes for a fun BVI dinner experience.

Because both Pirate’s Bight and the Willy T are located within The Bight, you don’t necessarily have to choose one or the other. Have lunch or afternoon drinks aboard the Willy T, return to the yacht for a swim and shower, and then go ashore for dinner.

Snorkeling The Caves

The Caves at Treasure Point are one of Norman Island’s signature snorkeling experiences.

The caves have been carved into the rocky shoreline, and you can snorkel directly into them. The combination of cliffs, underwater rock formations and marine life makes this a very different experience from snorkeling a traditional coral reef.

If Norman Island is your first overnight stop, we often recommend saving The Caves for the following morning rather than trying to squeeze everything into your arrival day.

You’ll be rested, you can enjoy the snorkel without rushing, and then continue with your itinerary.

The Indians — One of Our Favorite BVI Snorkeling Sites

Just offshore from Norman Island, The Indians are a group of dramatic rock pinnacles rising from the water.

They are one of the best-known snorkeling and diving sites in the BVI and one of our favorite places to stop on the morning after a Norman Island overnight.

Leave The Bight, pick up a National Parks mooring and spend the morning snorkeling before continuing east.

You don’t necessarily need to snorkel both The Caves and The Indians. If your group loves snorkeling, absolutely do both. If snorkeling is only one part of what you want to experience during the week, choose one and keep moving.

How Norman Island Fits Into a 7-Night BVI Charter

For most first-time guests, our preferred sequence is simple:

Nanny Cay → Norman Island → The Indians or The Caves → Cooper Island/Peter Island → Virgin Gorda

Arrive at Norman Island for your first evening, enjoy the Willy T or Pirate’s Bight, and spend the night in the protected waters of The Bight.

The following morning, snorkel The Caves or The Indians.

From there, continue east. Depending on what your group enjoys, you might head toward Peter Island for a more upscale resort experience, or stop at Cooper Island for lunch, snorkeling and the rum bar before continuing to Virgin Gorda.

This begins the counterclockwise route through the BVI that we generally recommend and gets you into the rhythm of the islands without spending your first day racing from one destination to another.

Who Will Love Norman Island?

Norman Island works for almost every type of charter group.

Families love the protected harbor, beach and snorkeling.

Couples and adult groups can enjoy the beach during the day and the livelier atmosphere of the Willy T.

Snorkelers have The Caves and The Indians immediately nearby.

First-time charter guests get an easy first passage and a large, protected place to spend their first night.

And for repeat visitors, there’s something wonderfully familiar about starting another BVI charter with the first Painkiller of the week in The Bight.

Our Norman Island Recommendation

Don’t overcomplicate Norman Island.

Make it your first night, secure a mooring in The Bight, get everyone settled and enjoy the fact that you’re finally in the BVI.

Visit the Willy T during the afternoon or for lunch. Have dinner at Pirate’s Bight if that’s more your group’s style. Wake up the following morning, jump in the Caribbean and snorkel The Caves or The Indians.

Then continue east.

VCY TIP: Norman Island isn’t simply somewhere to sleep on the first night. It’s one of the places that immediately makes a BVI charter feel like a BVI charter — boats of every size in the harbor, snorkeling around the corner, a beach restaurant ashore and the Willy T floating in the bay.
