That distinction matters because there isn't one power catamaran design that is best for every charter group.

The best yacht for three couples may be completely different from the best yacht for a family of ten—or five couples traveling together.

What Is the Biggest Difference Between Virgin Charter Yachts and MarineMax?

For us, the biggest difference is manufacturer choice.

MarineMax has a long relationship with Aquila and has built its BVI powercat charter program around Aquila designs.

Aquila makes impressive power catamarans.

In fact, Virgin Charter Yachts offers Aquila power catamarans too.

So choosing Virgin Charter Yachts does not mean choosing against Aquila.

It means Aquila is one of the options we can consider for your group rather than the starting and ending point of the search.

Our BVI bareboat fleet includes power catamarans from:

• Aquila
• Aventura
• Leopard
• Fountaine Pajot

MarineMax also offers models we don't currently have in our fleet, including the new MarineMax 505/Aquila 50. If that specific yacht is what you're looking for, MarineMax may be the better choice. Is Aquila a Good BVI Charter Powercat?

Absolutely! We wouldn't offer Aquila yachts ourselves if we didn't believe they could be excellent BVI charter boats.

Aquila power catamarans are known for generous interior volume, large entertaining spaces and layouts designed specifically around power cruising.

For some charter groups, an Aquila may be exactly what we recommend.

The difference is that at Virgin Charter Yachts, we can also ask:

• Would this group be more comfortable on an Aventura?
• Would a Leopard layout work better?
• Would a Fountaine Pajot give three couples more of the space they want?

Sometimes the answer is still Aquila.

But sometimes it isn't.

That's the advantage of being able to compare several manufacturers.

Why Yacht Layout Matters More Than Yacht Length

One of the biggest mistakes guests make when comparing BVI power catamarans is assuming that a larger yacht automatically means a better layout for their group.

It doesn't.

Two powercats of approximately the same length can have completely different accommodations.

One manufacturer might use the available space for larger cabins.

Another may add an additional cabin.

Another may create a bunk room that is perfect for children.

Another may dedicate more space to the salon or flybridge.

That's why we recommend starting with a very basic question:

Who is actually traveling?

• Three couples?
• Four couples?
• Five couples?
• Two families with children?
• Six couples?

The answer can completely change which powercat we recommend.

Virgin Charter Yachts vs. MarineMax for Three Couples

For six guests or three couples, both companies offer attractive options.

At this group size, we don't think the decision should be driven by maximum guest capacity.

Instead, look at:

• Cabin size
• Master-cabin configuration
• Flybridge space
• Interior layout
• Outdoor living areas
• Yacht age
• Equipment
• Price

For three couples, fewer but larger cabins can sometimes create a considerably more comfortable vacation than choosing a yacht designed to maximize guest capacity.

Virgin Charter Yachts can compare different manufacturers and layouts to determine which design makes the most sense for those particular six guests.

Virgin Charter Yachts vs. MarineMax for Four Couples

Eight guests or four couples also have excellent choices with both companies.

MarineMax offers Aquila-based powercats suitable for groups of eight.

Virgin Charter Yachts offers four-cabin powercats from several manufacturers, including Aquila and Leopard.

This is a group size where we would pay particular attention to the overall design rather than simply the cabin count.

If all four couples have suitable private cabins on several different yachts, the deciding factors can become:

• Flybridge layout
• Galley
• Outdoor living space
• Cabin equality
• Age of the yacht
• Equipment
• Price
• Overall design

This is also where having multiple manufacturers to compare becomes useful.

There isn't necessarily one universally "better" powercat.

There may simply be one yacht whose design fits your particular group better.

Virgin Charter Yachts vs. MarineMax for Five Couples

This is where cabin configuration becomes particularly important.

Ten guests can mean a family with children.

Or it can mean five adult couples.

Those groups may need very different yachts.

MarineMax 505 / Aquila 50

The MarineMax 505, based on the Aquila 50 power catamaran, offers five guest cabins for up to 10 guests.

Its sleeping configuration includes:

• 4 queen-bed cabins
• 1 bunk-bed cabin

The yacht has four heads rather than five. The fifth bunk cabin shares the port-aft head with the adjacent guest cabin.

For a family traveling with children or teenagers, this can be a very practical layout. Four conventional double cabins accommodate the adults, while children can use the bunk cabin.

For five adult couples, however, the arrangement is less equal. One couple would occupy the bunk cabin, and that cabin would also share a bathroom with another couple.

By comparison, VCY's five-cabin Aventura options can provide:

• 5 private cabins
• 5 double beds
• 5 heads

For five couples, that means every couple has a conventional double-bed cabin and their own private head.

Again, neither arrangement is inherently better. The Aquila 50 layout can work extremely well for a family, while the Aventura layout may be better suited to five couples.

The MarineMax 545

The MarineMax 545 is a 54-foot Aquila power catamaran designed to accommodate up to ten guests in five guest cabins.

But this is a perfect example of why we encourage charter guests to look beyond the advertised number of cabins.

The MarineMax 545's five guest cabins are configured as:

• 1 full-beam master cabin with a king bed on the main level, off the salon
• 3 VIP cabins with queen beds
• 1 bunk-bed cabin

For a family traveling with children or teenagers, that can be an excellent layout.

The adults can occupy the king and queen cabins while the children use the bunk cabin.

For five adult couples, however, the experience is different.

Four couples receive conventional king- or queen-bed cabins, while the fifth couple would share the bunk-bed cabin.

That doesn't make the Aquila 545 a bad layout.

In fact, for the right family group, the bunk cabin may be an advantage.

But it illustrates one of the most important things to understand when comparing BVI power catamarans:

Five cabins does not necessarily mean five equivalent cabins for five couples.

MarineMax's own specifications identify the fifth cabin as a bunk-bed cabin. The yacht has five heads, although the bunk cabin uses a combined head/shower rather than the separate shower arrangement of the other cabins.

Both of MarineMax's current five-cabin powercat options, the Aquila 50 and the Aquila 545, use the fifth cabin as a bunk cabin, while VCY's five-cabin Aventura options can provide five conventional double-bed cabins.

VCY's Five-Couple Options

Virgin Charter Yachts offers Aventura power catamarans configured very differently.

Our five-cabin Aventura options can provide:

• 5 private cabins
• 5 double beds
• 5 heads

For five adult couples, that creates a particularly straightforward arrangement:

Every couple gets a private cabin with a double bed.

Nobody has to take the bunk room.

That doesn't automatically make an Aventura better than an Aquila.

For a family, the Aquila layout might actually make more sense.

But for five couples, five conventional double-bed cabins may provide a more equitable arrangement.

This is exactly why we don't think travelers should choose a yacht based solely on its length, maximum guest capacity or even its number of cabins.

The better question is:

Where is everyone actually going to sleep?

Don't Count Cabins. Count Beds.

This is one of the most useful pieces of advice we can give anyone planning a BVI powercat charter.

Don't count cabins. Count beds.

A yacht advertised as "five cabins" could mean five conventional double-bed guest cabins.

Or it could mean four conventional double cabins and a bunk room.

Neither layout is inherently better.

They simply suit different groups.

For a family with children, the bunk room may be ideal.

For five couples, five double-bed cabins may be preferable.

So don't simply ask:

"Does the yacht sleep ten?"

Ask:

"Where are all ten people actually sleeping?"

That one question can make a significant difference when choosing the right yacht for your group.

What About 12 Guests or Six Couples?

This is an area where Virgin Charter Yachts offers an especially unusual option.

Our Aventura 50 Unwinding is configured with:

• 6 private guest cabins
• 6 double beds
• 6 heads
• Capacity for 12 guests

For six couples, this is an exceptionally useful layout.

Every couple receives a private cabin.

Every couple has a double bed.

Every cabin has its own head.

Nobody has to sleep in the salon.

Nobody is assigned to a bunk room.

And nobody needs to use a secondary forepeak berth.

If you are specifically searching for a BVI bareboat power catamaran for 12 adults or six couples, Unwinding provides an extremely unusual combination of guest capacity and private double-bed cabins.  No other bareboat powercat manufacturer offers a 6 double-cabin layout. 

What If We're a Family Rather Than a Group of Couples?

Then our recommendation may change completely.

This is why we don't believe there is one "best" BVI powercat.

Consider a family traveling with parents, grandparents and several children.

A yacht with four conventional king/queen cabins plus a bunk room could actually be a better fit than five equal double cabins.

The children may enjoy the bunks, while the adults receive the larger suites.

Likewise, a family may care more about flybridge space, refrigeration, swimming access or interior living areas than whether every cabin is equal.

The best layout for five couples is not necessarily the best layout for a family of ten.

This is where comparing Aquila, Aventura, Leopard and Fountaine Pajot can be particularly helpful.

Large Marine Company vs. Boutique BVI Charter Company

The other major difference between MarineMax Vacations and Virgin Charter Yachts isn't the yachts.

It's the companies themselves.

MarineMax Vacations

• MarineMax is part of a large U.S.-based marine organization with extensive experience in boat sales, ownership and charter.
• Its relationship with Aquila gives MarineMax considerable familiarity with that particular brand and its powercat designs.
• For someone who already knows they want an Aquila or values working with a large marine organization, MarineMax may be an excellent fit.

Which Company Is Better for Five Couples?

For five couples, we would compare the individual yachts very carefully.

The MarineMax 545 has five guest cabins, but one of those five is a bunk-bed cabin. Its other four accommodations consist of one king master and three queen VIP cabins.

VCY's five-cabin Aventura options provide another alternative with five double-bed cabins.

For a family with children, the Aquila's bunk cabin could be an advantage.

For five adult couples, the Aventura's five conventional double-bed cabins may be preferable.

Rather than declaring one universally "best," compare:

• Bed configuration
• Cabin equality
• Heads
• Interior volume
• Flybridge
• Outdoor spaces
• Yacht equipment
• Age
• Total charter cost

Then decide which features matter most to your particular group.

Is Virgin Charter Yachts Better Than MarineMax Vacations?

That depends on what you're looking for.

MarineMax may be the better fit if:

• You specifically want an Aquila power catamaran, especially the Aquila 50, which we currently do not offer

• You aren't sure whether Aquila, Aventura, Leopard or Fountaine Pajot has the best layout for your group.
• You're traveling with five couples and want five private double-bed cabins.
