You don't need a group of eight or ten people to charter a private yacht in the British Virgin Islands.
Some of our favorite BVI charters are for just two people.
A private yacht can be an incredible way to celebrate a honeymoon, anniversary or milestone birthday — or simply spend a week together in the BVI without coordinating a vacation around a large group of friends or family.
But chartering as a couple is a little different from chartering with a larger group, and there are some things worth understanding before you begin comparing yachts.
The first is that there really aren't one-cabin charter yachts designed specifically for two people. Even smaller charter yachts generally have at least three guest cabins because yachts of this size are normally designed to accommodate groups of six or more.
That doesn't mean you can't charter one for two.
It simply means you're chartering the entire yacht, not paying by the cabin.
The second consideration is what you actually want your vacation to feel like. With only two people aboard a bareboat, the two of you are also the entire crew. For experienced couples who love boating, that can be part of the fun. But we find that many couples looking for a private yacht for two are really looking for a completely relaxing experience — and they often gravitate toward a fully crewed yacht.
Here's how to decide which experience makes the most sense for you.
Can Just Two People Charter a Private Yacht in the BVI?
Absolutely.
Whether you choose bareboat or fully crewed, the yacht is private to your party.
If a yacht has three guest cabins and you book it for two people, the other cabins simply remain unused. They aren't sold to other guests, and you won't be matched with another couple.
That privacy is one of the biggest differences between chartering a yacht and booking a cruise or resort.
You decide how to spend your days, where you want to go and how much — or how little — you want to do.
On a fully crewed yacht, your meals, itinerary and activities can also be personalized around the two of you.
Why Aren't There One-Cabin Charter Yachts for Couples?
We get this question fairly often.
It would seem logical that if only two people are traveling, there should be a smaller luxury yacht designed with one beautiful master cabin.
In practice, that's generally not how the charter market works.
The cost of buying, maintaining, insuring and operating a quality charter yacht doesn't decrease enough by eliminating a few guest cabins to make a one-cabin yacht practical for the charter market.
Most charter yachts are therefore designed around the groups that book most frequently — often six to eight guests — while still offering layouts that can work beautifully when fewer guests charter the entire yacht.

A couple chartering her privately can enjoy the master suite and the entire yacht without needing to fill the other two cabins.
So don't think of the unused cabins as something you're paying for and not using.
You're paying for the entire private yacht and the experience that comes with it.
Does a Yacht Charter Cost More Per Person When There Are Only Two of You?
Yes.
This is important to understand when comparing the cost of a BVI yacht charter.
You're reserving an entire yacht, so the weekly charter rate doesn't drop proportionally because only two people are aboard.
If a yacht is booked by two guests, those two people are essentially carrying the cost of the yacht themselves. If three or four couples charter the same yacht together, they're dividing that cost among six or eight people.
So on a per-person basis, chartering a private yacht for two will normally be considerably more expensive than chartering with a group of friends.
That's particularly important if budget is one of your primary considerations.
But couples who charter privately usually aren't trying to find the lowest per-person vacation cost.
They're choosing it because they want the entire yacht and experience to themselves.
Bareboat or Fully Crewed: Which Is Better for a Couple?
This is usually the biggest decision.
And we wouldn't automatically recommend the same answer to every couple.
The question is really:
Do you want operating and managing the yacht to be part of your vacation, or do you want to completely relax and have someone else take care of everything?
For a larger bareboat group, the responsibilities of operating the yacht can be divided among several people.
With only two guests aboard, everything falls to the two of you.
That's one reason we find that many couples who contact us about a private yacht for two ultimately choose a fully crewed charter. They're often looking for a completely relaxing vacation together rather than a week where the two of them are also the captain and crew.
Choose Bareboat If You Both Love Boating
A bareboat powercat can be a fantastic vacation for an experienced boating couple who genuinely enjoys operating a boat together.
You have the entire yacht to yourselves. You decide when to leave in the morning, where to go next, when to stop for a swim and whether dinner means cooking aboard or taking the dinghy ashore to a restaurant.
For couples who love boating, operating the yacht is part of the experience rather than work.
If you grew up boating, own a powerboat at home and genuinely enjoy being at the helm, having your own powercat for a week in the BVI can be an incredible experience.
But bareboating as a couple is different from bareboating with a group of six or eight.
With Two People, You Are the Entire Crew
This is something we encourage couples to think about realistically.
Every time you pick up a mooring ball, one person needs to operate the yacht while the other person handles the mooring pickup and secures the boat.
There aren't four other people standing at the bow ready to help.
The same applies throughout the week. The two of you are responsible for operating the yacht, handling lines, managing the dinghy, planning your route, preparing meals if you're eating aboard and taking care of the normal day-to-day responsibilities that come with bareboating.
For an experienced boating couple who works well together and enjoys doing all of that, it can be a wonderful way to explore the BVI.
But if what you're picturing is seven days of completely relaxing together, it's worth considering whether you really want one of you driving the yacht while the other is handling the mooring ball every afternoon.
That's one of the reasons that many couples who come to us looking for a private charter for two tend to gravitate toward a fully crewed yacht.
Choose Fully Crewed If You Want to Completely Relax
For many couples, this is the experience they were actually imagining when they first started looking at a private BVI yacht charter.
Your professional captain handles the yacht, navigation and moorings. Your chef takes care of provisions and prepares meals around your preferences.
Neither of you needs to be responsible for operating the yacht.
Instead of arriving at your next destination and immediately thinking about who is going to pick up the mooring, you can both be enjoying the arrival.
Instead of one person driving while the other handles lines, you're both guests.
And instead of preparing dinner and cleaning up afterward, you can relax while your chef takes care of it.
That's why fully crewed charters can be particularly well suited to honeymoons, anniversaries and couples who simply want a completely relaxing week together.
Will Having a Crew Make It Feel Less Private?
This is one of the most common concerns couples have about choosing a fully crewed yacht.
A good professional crew understands the difference between providing excellent service and being constantly present.
You don't need to entertain your crew.
The captain and chef have their own responsibilities and crew accommodations. When you need them, they're there. When you want to spend time alone together, they know how to give you space.
If you're having a drink on the flybridge, swimming off the back of the yacht, relaxing on the bow or enjoying a quiet evening together, the crew doesn't need to be part of that experience.
For couples in particular, we look for crews who are good at reading their guests and understanding when to be attentive and when to disappear into the background.
That balance is a big part of what makes a great crewed charter.
Can the Crew Arrange Private Experiences Just for the Two of Us?
Yes — and this is one of the best reasons to consider fully crewed for a couples charter.
Because the itinerary isn't built around a large group, the captain and chef have tremendous flexibility to personalize the week around the two of you.
Depending on the yacht, destination and conditions, your crew can help create experiences such as a private beach picnic, cocktails or appetizers on a quiet beach, a special dinner aboard, a secluded snorkeling stop, sunset drinks or another private experience designed around something you enjoy.
If you're celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, birthday or another occasion, tell us before the charter.
The more your crew knows about what you enjoy, the more they can personalize the experience.
And personalization doesn't have to mean rose petals and champagne.
If your perfect anniversary is lobster on Anegada followed by a quiet evening aboard under the stars, that's what matters.
What Is Dining Like on a Crewed Yacht for Just Two People?
This is another area where a private crewed charter is very different from a resort.
Before the charter, you'll complete a preference sheet covering the foods you like, foods you dislike, dietary restrictions, favorite drinks and other preferences.
Your chef then creates menus specifically around you.
You're not choosing from a restaurant menu designed for hundreds of guests, and you aren't eating on someone else's schedule.
Want a light breakfast because you're going snorkeling?
Prefer a long lunch aboard and dinner ashore?
Want dinner later because you're enjoying sunset?
Your crew can build the day around you.
For couples who enjoy food, this can be one of the highlights of a fully crewed charter.
Is a 55-, 60- or Even Larger Yacht Too Big for Two People?
Not at all.
This is another place where thinking about yachts like hotel rooms can be misleading.
You're not choosing a larger yacht because you need all of its bedrooms.
You're choosing it because you want the master suite, flybridge, aft cockpit, foredeck, swim platform, water toys and living space that come with the yacht.
For two guests, a yacht with three or four cabins doesn't necessarily feel excessive.
It can simply feel like an enormous amount of private space.
And if you choose an even larger luxury yacht, you're generally paying for larger accommodations, additional amenities and more space — not because you need to fill every bed.
What About Two Couples?
Two couples can be an especially good fit for a BVI yacht charter.
You're still traveling with a very small group, but you're dividing the yacht cost among four people instead of two.
The important consideration is cabin equality.
If two couples are splitting the charter evenly, we generally look for a yacht with two excellent double cabins so one couple doesn't feel as though they received the beautiful master suite while the other got a significantly lesser cabin.
The same principle applies when three couples charter together.

Is a BVI Yacht Charter Good for a Honeymoon?
Absolutely.
A private yacht allows you to experience several islands without repeatedly packing, changing hotels or following someone else's itinerary.
Wake up at Norman Island one morning and North Sound the next.
Spend the afternoon snorkeling if you feel like it — or don't.
Stay aboard for dinner one evening and go ashore the next.
And on a fully crewed yacht, neither person has to be responsible for operating the boat, preparing meals or organizing each day.
For couples who want a honeymoon that feels private and personalized rather than programmed, the BVI works particularly well.
Do Couples Need a Special “Romantic” BVI Itinerary?
No.
We wouldn't create an entirely different BVI itinerary simply because only two people are traveling.
The places that make the BVI spectacular for a family or group of friends are still spectacular for a couple.
What changes is how much flexibility you have.
With only two people making decisions, it's very easy to change plans.
You might spend a morning exploring The Baths, have dinner at CocoMaya, spend time around North Sound or Oil Nut Bay, head to Anegada for a beach day and lobster dinner, snorkel The Caves or The Indians, visit Necker Island or spend an afternoon at White Bay.
You don't need to check every destination off a list.
One of the luxuries of traveling as a couple is being able to decide that you love somewhere and simply stay longer.
What Time of Year Is Best for a Couples Charter?
There really isn't one best month for every couple.
December through April generally brings the traditional BVI trade winds and is also the busier part of the charter season.
May through July can be one of our favorite periods for guests who prefer fewer boats and generally flatter seas.
August through October is the quietest period, but many fully crewed yachts are unavailable during part of this time because crews and yachts may leave the BVI for maintenance, vacation or another charter season.

Is Bareboat Less Expensive Than Fully Crewed for Two?
Generally, yes, but it's important to compare the complete vacation rather than just the advertised weekly yacht rate.
With a bareboat, you'll separately account for provisions, fuel, dining ashore and other charter expenses.
Most BVI fully crewed yachts are offered on an all-inclusive basis, which generally includes the yacht, professional crew, meals aboard, standard ship's bar and many onboard water toys and activities.
A crewed yacht will still usually cost more, particularly for only two guests.
But you're buying a very different experience.
The better question isn't simply:
“Which one costs less?”
It's:
“Which vacation do we actually want?”
Can We Add a Captain to a Bareboat Instead?
Yes, a captain can be arranged for a bareboat if needed.
For some couples, that can make sense.
But if neither of you intends to operate the yacht and you're considering having a captain for most or all of the charter, we would also encourage you to compare the cost and experience with a fully crewed yacht.
A fully crewed yacht was designed around professional service. In addition to the captain, you have a chef, customized meals and the other elements of the crewed experience.
We'll happily compare both options rather than trying to push you toward one.
What Size Yacht Should a Couple Charter?
There isn't a correct yacht length for two people.
And we wouldn't tell you that smaller is automatically better.
Instead, think about what you want from the yacht:
- Do you want bareboat or fully crewed?
- Powercat, sailing catamaran or motor yacht?
- How important is a beautiful master suite?
- Do you want a large flybridge?
- Do you care about water toys?
- Would you like a hot tub?
- Are you scuba divers?
- How much outdoor living space do you want?
- What is your budget?
Those answers are far more useful than deciding that two people “should” charter a particular size yacht.

Can two people charter an entire yacht in the BVI?
Yes. Both bareboat and fully crewed yachts can be chartered privately by two guests. You reserve the yacht rather than individual cabins.
Will other guests be added to our fully crewed yacht?
No. A private crewed yacht charter is private to your party. If you're the only two guests, the unused guest cabins aren't sold to strangers.
Are there one-cabin charter yachts for couples?
Not typically in the type of BVI charter fleet VCY offers. Charter yachts generally have at least three guest cabins because they're designed to accommodate the six- to eight-person groups that make up much of the charter market.
Are we paying less because only two people are aboard?
Usually not by much, if at all. You're reserving the entire yacht, so the weekly yacht rate isn't simply calculated per guest. This makes the per-person cost higher for two guests than for a larger group sharing the same yacht.
Is a bareboat charter difficult with only two people?
It can be more work than bareboating with a larger group because the two of you are the entire crew.
One person operates the yacht while the other handles the mooring pickup, and you'll share responsibility for lines, the dinghy, navigation and day-to-day life aboard.
Experienced boating couples who enjoy working together may love it. Couples looking for a completely relaxing vacation often prefer a fully crewed yacht.
Do we need boating experience for a fully crewed yacht?
No. The professional captain operates the yacht, so guests don't need boating or sailing experience.
Will the captain and chef be around us all day?
No. Professional crews understand that guests value privacy, particularly on a couples charter. They're available when you want service but also know when to give you space to enjoy the yacht together.
Can the chef customize meals for just the two of us?
Yes. Your chef plans meals around your preferences and dietary requirements. One of the advantages of chartering privately for two is that the menu only needs to please the two of you.
Can the crew arrange something special for an anniversary or honeymoon?

Is a large yacht excessive for two guests?
Not necessarily. Larger yachts give two guests more private living space, larger suites, outdoor areas, water toys and amenities. You don't need to fill every cabin for a larger yacht to make sense.
What if we're traveling with another couple?
Four guests can be a great yacht-charter group. We'd pay particular attention to finding a yacht with two comparable double cabins if both couples are sharing the charter cost.
