The answer isn't necessarily the smallest yacht you can find.
A couple may prefer a larger bareboat powercat because they value space, stability and privacy. Another couple may want a captain and chef taking care of everything on a fully crewed yacht. And some experienced boaters simply want the yacht entirely to themselves.
The best yacht for a couple depends less on how many people it can sleep and more on how you want to spend your week.
Why Charter an Entire Yacht for Just Two People?
A private yacht gives couples something that's difficult to replicate at a resort.
You wake up somewhere different almost every morning. You can swim before breakfast, spend the afternoon at a quiet beach, visit a favorite restaurant ashore or stay aboard and watch the sunset from your own deck.
There is no group itinerary to follow and no other guests whose preferences need to be accommodated.
On a bareboat, the yacht is completely yours.

There are three very different ways for a couple to charter in the BVI.
Bareboat
If one or both of you have sufficient boating experience and enjoy operating a yacht, a bareboat provides the greatest privacy and independence.
You operate the yacht, plan your route, pick up your own moorings, provision your food and beverages and prepare your own meals.
For the right couple, that's not work — it's part of the fun.
You also have something no crewed yacht can provide: the yacht is completely yours.

Bareboat With a Captain
If you like the informality of bareboating but don't have the experience required to operate the yacht — or simply don't want the responsibility on vacation — we can arrange a professional freelance captain, subject to availability.
The captain operates the yacht and can provide invaluable local knowledge, but this is still a bareboat vacation.
You remain responsible for provisioning and meals, and the captain needs accommodations aboard.
For just two guests, that generally isn't difficult because you'll have plenty of unused cabin space.
Fully Crewed Yacht
For couples who want the yacht equivalent of a luxury resort, a fully crewed charter is an entirely different experience.
A typical BVI crewed catamaran has a professional captain and private chef. Your meals are prepared for you, your itinerary is customized around your interests, and the crew handles the yacht and day-to-day service.
Many BVI crewed catamarans are also all-inclusive, with meals, standard beverages and most normal yacht operating expenses included in the charter rate.
For a honeymoon, anniversary or simply a week when neither of you wants to cook, shop or think about logistics, this can be an exceptional vacation.

Don't Choose a Yacht Based Only on the Number of Cabins
This is probably our most important advice for couples:
Don't assume a two-person charter requires a two-cabin yacht.
Yacht charter pricing doesn't work like booking a hotel room where you simply pay for the number of beds you use.
You are chartering the entire yacht.
A four-cabin powercat doesn't suddenly become too large because only one cabin will be occupied. In fact, the extra space may be exactly what makes the vacation special.
Think about where you'll actually spend your time.
A larger powercat may give you:
- A spacious flybridge for sunsets
- Large aft-deck dining and lounging areas
- A comfortable salon
- More outdoor seating
- Better separation between indoor and outdoor spaces
- A larger master cabin
- More storage
- Additional refrigeration
- A watermaker
- More comfortable living space for an entire week
For many couples, those features matter far more than whether there are two unused cabins down below.
What Should Couples Look for in a Bareboat Powercat?
For a couple choosing a bareboat, we would focus less on maximum guest capacity and more on comfort and ease of use.
A flybridge is particularly nice for two people because it creates another outdoor living space and gives you a wonderful place to enjoy the views while cruising.
Air conditioning, a generator and a watermaker can also make a substantial difference in comfort.
Think about the galley and refrigeration if you plan to eat aboard frequently. Consider how easily two people can handle the yacht and dinghy. And look at the outdoor spaces where you'll actually spend most of your week.
The BVI is also particularly well suited to powercats because distances between islands are relatively short. You don't need to wait for the wind — simply decide where you want to go next.
For couples who want maximum privacy and already have the appropriate boating experience, it's hard to beat having an entire powercat to yourselves.
What Should Couples Look for in a Crewed Yacht?
Choosing a crewed yacht for two is different.
You aren't simply choosing a boat.
You're choosing the yacht, the crew and the experience together.
The yacht might technically accommodate six, eight or even ten guests, but that doesn't mean it isn't an excellent choice for two.
Instead of asking how many people the yacht sleeps, we look at questions such as:
- How good is the master cabin?
- Is the master on deck or down in a hull?
- How much private outdoor space does the yacht have?
- Does the yacht feel intimate enough for two?
- What water toys and amenities are aboard?
- How experienced is the crew?
- How long has the crew worked together?
- What is the chef's style?
- Does the crew's personality fit the couple?
For two guests, crew selection becomes particularly important because you'll naturally interact with the captain and chef more than a group of eight or ten guests would.
A fantastic crew knows how to be warm and engaging while also recognizing when a couple wants the yacht to themselves.
That's one reason we don't recommend choosing a crewed yacht from photographs alone.
Some of Our Favorite Crewed Yacht Features for Couples
There isn't one yacht that's universally best for every couple, but certain layouts and features work especially well.
An on-deck master cabin can be particularly appealing. Instead of going down into one of the hulls, the primary suite is located on the main deck and may offer larger windows, excellent views and easier access to the yacht's living spaces.
For example, Forever Young, a Two Oceans 555 powercat, accommodates up to six guests but has an on-deck master cabin that makes her particularly attractive for a couple. You're getting the space and amenities of a substantial private yacht without choosing it because you need to fill every cabin. The yacht currently accommodates up to six guests in three guest cabins.
Other couples may prefer a yacht because of its flybridge, water toys, chef, crew, larger master suite or simply the overall atmosphere aboard.
The important point is that maximum guest capacity shouldn't be the starting point.

Will Having a Crew Aboard Feel Awkward for Just Two Guests?
This is a very common question, particularly for couples considering their first crewed charter.
Usually, no.
Professional charter crews understand that part of their job is knowing when to be present and when not to be.
They may serve breakfast and then disappear while you enjoy the morning. Your captain might join you for snorkeling or explain something about the islands, then leave you alone with a cocktail at sunset.
Good crews become very skilled at reading their guests.
Crewed yachts are also designed with crew accommodations separate from the guest cabins, so the captain and chef aren't sleeping in the guest area.
If privacy is especially important to you, tell your broker. That's useful information when matching you with a crew.
The Private Chef Can Be One of the Best Parts of a Couples Charter
For many couples, food becomes one of the highlights of a fully crewed yacht charter.
Before the trip, you'll complete a preference sheet covering your favorite foods, dietary restrictions, allergies, beverages and things you simply don't like.
Your chef then plans the week around you.
That might mean breakfast outside overlooking Norman Island, a light lunch after snorkeling, appetizers at sunset and dinner under the stars.
And because there are only two guests, the chef can tailor the experience very specifically to your preferences.
If dining is important to you, look at the chef as carefully as you look at the yacht.
We recommend reviewing sample menus and talking to your broker about the chef's experience and guest feedback rather than simply choosing the prettiest boat.
Is a BVI Yacht Charter Romantic?
It certainly can be — but we wouldn't build a couples itinerary around manufactured "romantic" experiences every day.
One of the best things about the BVI is that the setting does most of the work.
Spend a morning snorkeling before the day boats arrive.
Have lunch overlooking North Sound.
Book a massage at Peter Island or Scrub Island.
Spend an afternoon on a quiet beach.
Have a Painkiller at Soggy Dollar.
Watch the sunset from your flybridge.
Have dinner aboard under the stars.
Or decide at 10:00 in the morning that you like where you are and aren't going anywhere that day.
That's the luxury of traveling by private yacht.

What Is the Best Time of Year for a Couples BVI Charter?
Couples who aren't tied to school schedules have one major advantage: you can travel when the BVI is less crowded.
January through April offers the BVI's classic winter weather and most consistent trade winds, but it is also peak season.
For powercat guests, May and June are two of our favorite months. The trade winds tend to become lighter, which can create beautifully flat seas, and there are considerably fewer yachts competing for popular moorings and destinations.
Early December can also be an excellent option before the Christmas and New Year's rush.
For fully crewed yachts, December through July generally offers the greatest selection. Many crewed yachts are unavailable from August through October because of hurricane-season insurance requirements, storage, maintenance and crew holidays.

How Much Does a BVI Yacht Charter for Two Cost?
The biggest misconception is that a yacht should be inexpensive simply because there are only two guests.
You are still chartering the entire yacht.
For bareboats, pricing is based primarily on the yacht, season and charter dates rather than simply dividing the rate by the number of guests.
The same applies to fully crewed yachts. A crewed yacht that accommodates six guests generally has a weekly charter rate for the yacht, not a separate two-person price.
That means couples often pay more per person than a group filling every cabin.
But that's also what creates the experience: you have an entire yacht, its living spaces and — on a crewed charter — its captain and chef dedicated to just the two of you.
