These options can sometimes look similar when you're browsing yacht websites, but the actual vacations are very different.

Adding a captain to a bareboat does not turn it into a fully crewed yacht.

What Is a BVI Bareboat Charter?

A bareboat charter means you charter the yacht and operate it yourself.

There is no professional captain or crew permanently aboard.

You are responsible for operating the yacht, navigating, picking up moorings, monitoring the vessel and handling the normal responsibilities that come with being in command.

You also provision the yacht, prepare your meals and handle your own day-to-day housekeeping.

For experienced boaters, this can be an incredible way to explore the BVI.

You determine when you leave in the morning.

You choose where to stop.

You decide whether dinner is aboard, at a beach bar or at a restaurant ashore.

And at the end of the day, the yacht is completely yours.

Who Is a Bareboat Charter Best For?

Bareboating is particularly appealing to guests who:

• Have appropriate boating experience
• Enjoy operating a yacht
• Want maximum independence
• Prefer privacy without crew aboard
• Enjoy preparing some of their own meals or eating on shore
• Want a more hands-on boating vacation

The BVI is one of the world's best-known bareboat destinations because the islands are relatively close together and there are numerous anchorages, mooring fields and places to explore.

That doesn't mean operating a large powercat requires no experience.

Before confirming a bareboat charter, the charter company will evaluate the skipper's boating experience to determine whether it is appropriate for the yacht being chartered.

What If I Want a Bareboat but Don't Want to Drive It?

This is where adding a professional captain can be an excellent solution.

The captain operates the yacht and can provide valuable local knowledge about the islands, mooring fields, weather and itinerary.

This can be particularly useful for guests who:

• Don't have sufficient experience to qualify for the yacht
• Are comfortable boating but don't want responsibility for a large powercat on vacation
• Are visiting the BVI for the first time
• Want local knowledge
• Want to relax rather than handle the yacht themselves

But there is an important misconception we want to clarify.

Adding a Captain Does NOT Turn a Bareboat Into a Crewed Yacht

A bareboat with a captain is still fundamentally a bareboat vacation.

The captain's primary responsibility is operating the yacht.

You still generally:

• Provision the yacht
• Prepare your meals
• Make your own drinks
• Handle your personal belongings
• Live aboard the yacht much as you would on a traditional bareboat

The captain isn't functioning as a chef, steward or full-service crew.

This is very different from a fully crewed luxury yacht.

How Much Does It Cost to Add a Captain to a BVI Bareboat?

Virgin Charter Yachts can currently arrange a professional freelance captain for $250 per day plus gratuity, subject to availability and the particular charter.

That means adding a captain can be a relatively economical way to enjoy a BVI bareboat even if you don't want—or aren't qualified—to operate the yacht yourself.

However, remember that the captain also needs accommodations aboard the yacht.

That matters when choosing your boat.

If you have ten guests plus a captain, for example, we need to look carefully at where everyone will sleep rather than simply choosing a yacht advertised as "sleeps 10."

Don't count cabins. Count beds—and remember to count the captain.

How Much Should You Tip a Bareboat Captain?

For bareboat charters where VCY arranges a freelance captain, we recommend gratuity based on the charter experience and yacht charter rate, rather than simply calculating a percentage of the captain's daily wage.

Our general recommendation is 10–15% of the bareboat charter rate, depending on service.

Why?

We work with a very small group of freelance captains we trust to provide the level of service we expect for VCY guests.

These captains are independent and can work for different charter companies throughout the BVI.

We want our guests to have access to experienced captains who know the islands, know the yachts and provide an excellent charter experience.

What Is a Fully Crewed BVI Yacht Charter?

A fully crewed charter is an entirely different type of vacation.

Instead of renting a bareboat and adding someone to operate it, you are chartering a yacht that is professionally operated by its permanent or established crew.

A typical BVI crewed catamaran includes:

• Professional captain
• Private chef
• Meals prepared aboard
• Standard beverages
• Personalized itinerary
• Daily service
• Water toys and activities
• Guest-oriented hospitality throughout the charter

The captain isn't simply there to drive the yacht.

And the chef isn't simply there to cook dinner.

What Does the Captain Do on a Fully Crewed Yacht?

A professional crewed-yacht captain is responsible for the yacht, safety and navigation, but their role goes much further.

A great BVI charter captain also understands:

• Which anchorages work best in particular weather
• Where to snorkel
• Where to find quieter beaches
• Which beach bars fit your group
• Where children may have the most fun
• When to visit popular destinations
• Where to paddleboard, e-foil or use water toys
• How to adapt the itinerary when weather changes

Rather than following a rigid itinerary, the captain can adjust the week around your interests and conditions.

What Does the Chef Do?

Food is one of the major differences between a bareboat and a fully crewed yacht.

Before your charter, you'll normally complete a preference sheet explaining:

• Favorite foods
• Dietary restrictions
• Allergies
• Children's preferences
• Favorite cocktails
• Wine preferences
• Foods you dislike

The chef then plans meals around your group.

Breakfast might be served on the aft deck overlooking Norman Island.

Is a Crewed Yacht More Expensive Than a Bareboat?

Yes, generally.

But it isn't an apples-to-apples comparison.

A bareboat rate primarily buys use of the yacht.

With a crewed yacht, you're paying for a much broader experience that may include:

• Chef
• Food
• Standard beverages
• Fuel
• Water toys

• Much of the yacht's normal operating expense

That is why comparing only the advertised weekly rates can be misleading.

Which Gives You More Privacy?

A traditional bareboat provides the greatest privacy because no crew lives aboard.

A bareboat with captain means one additional person is aboard and will need appropriate sleeping accommodations.

A fully crewed yacht usually has at least a captain and chef aboard, and larger yachts may have additional crew.

However, professionally designed crewed yachts generally provide separate crew accommodations and crews are accustomed to giving guests privacy.

Many experienced crew members know when guests want interaction—and when they want the yacht to themselves.

Which Option Gives You the Most Freedom?

This depends on what you mean by freedom.

A bareboat gives an experienced skipper the freedom to operate the yacht and make decisions independently.

A bareboat with captain removes the responsibility of driving while preserving much of the informal bareboat experience.

A fully crewed yacht gives you a different kind of freedom: The freedom not to think about operating the boat, provisioning, cooking, cleaning or planning every detail.

You simply enjoy the BVI.

What About Families With Children?

All three options can work well for families.

An experienced boating family may love bareboating.

A family without sufficient boating experience may prefer a bareboat with captain.

A family wanting a true vacation where parents don't have to operate the yacht, shop, cook and clean may strongly prefer a fully crewed charter.

The children's ages and your family's vacation style matter more than a universal rule.

What About Groups of Couples?

Again, consider what kind of vacation everyone wants.

If several members of the group enjoy boating and cooking together, bareboating can be great fun.

If nobody wants responsibility for operating the yacht, adding a captain solves that problem.

If nobody wants responsibility for operating the yacht OR cooking, provisioning and cleaning, a fully crewed charter may be the better choice.

For groups of couples, also pay close attention to cabin configuration.

A yacht that sleeps ten isn't necessarily a yacht with five equivalent double-bed cabins for five couples.

Bareboat + Captain vs. Fully Crewed: The Biggest Difference

If we had to explain the difference in one sentence, it would be this:

A captain takes responsibility for operating and driving your bareboat; a professional crew takes responsibility for creating your total charter experience.

Neither is inherently better.

They're simply different vacations.

Which BVI Yacht Charter Is Right for You?

Choose a bareboat if you have appropriate experience, enjoy operating the yacht and want maximum independence.

Choose a bareboat with captain if you like the freedom and informality of bareboating but don't want—or aren't qualified—to operate the yacht yourself.

Choose a fully crewed yacht if you want a luxury vacation where a professional captain and chef take care of the yacht, meals and day-to-day experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I charter a BVI bareboat without boating experience?

If you don't have sufficient experience to qualify to operate the yacht yourself, a professional captain may be added subject to availability and charter-company requirements.

Can I hire a captain for only part of my bareboat charter?

Generally no.  Since captains are freelance and can work for multiple BVI companies, they typically will only book 5-7 night charters as they don't want to book 2-3 days just to miss out on a potentially longer 5-7 night booking. 

Does a bareboat captain cook?

No. A captain added to a bareboat should not be confused with a chef. Guests remain responsible for their meals unless separate arrangements have specifically been made.

Can I also add a Chef to a Bareboat?

Generally, no. There are very few freelance chefs available in the BVI, and most focus on working in villas rather than yachts. If you would like both a professional captain and chef aboard, we recommend looking at fully crewed yacht options instead.

Does the captain sleep aboard?

Yes. A captain needs appropriate accommodations aboard, so for a bareboat Charter with a captain, we need to account for the captain when choosing the yacht and cabin configuration. On a fully-crewed luxury yacht, the crew always has dedicated, separate accommodations. 

Does a fully crewed yacht include food?

Many BVI crewed catamarans operate on an all-inclusive basis that includes meals and standard beverages. Exact inclusions vary by yacht and contract.

Is a crewed yacht worth the additional cost?

For guests who value having a professional captain, private chef, personalized itinerary and full-service vacation, it can be. For experienced boaters who enjoy operating the yacht themselves, a bareboat may be the better choice.
