Choosing the right BVI bareboat charter company can be almost as important as choosing the yacht itself.

The British Virgin Islands are one of the world's premier bareboat charter destinations, and there are numerous well-established charter companies operating from Tortola. Some manage enormous fleets. Others specialize in sailing yachts. Some focus almost exclusively on a single manufacturer, while others manage yachts from many different brands.

So which is the best BVI bareboat charter company?

The answer depends on what you are looking for.

A couple searching for a traditional sailing monohull has very different needs from five couples searching for a five-cabin power catamaran. An experienced sailor may prioritize sailing performance, while a family may care more about cabin configuration, air conditioning, watermakers, refrigerator space and the amount of room on the flybridge.

At Virgin Charter Yachts, we have been operating in the British Virgin Islands since 1996. Over those three decades, we have watched the BVI bareboat industry evolve from predominantly sailing monohulls to a market filled with sailing catamarans and increasingly sophisticated power catamarans.

Because we compete with the companies discussed in this guide, we obviously have a point of view. But there are legitimate reasons to choose each of them.

Quick Comparison: BVI Bareboat Charter Companies

Important: This comparison is specifically for bareboat charters. Some companies may offer crewed yachts or other charter products separately, but those are not included here.

For bareboat power catamarans in the BVI, the three primary operators are Virgin Charter Yachts, The Moorings and MarineMax Vacations. The key difference is brand choice: The Moorings focuses on Leopard powercats, MarineMax focuses on Aquila, while Virgin Charter Yachts offers multiple brands including Leopard, Aquila, Aventura and Fountaine Pajot.

5. And, perhaps most importantly, the individual yacht available for your dates.

1. Virgin Charter Yachts

Best for: Power catamarans, different yacht brands, large-group layouts and boutique service

Virgin Charter Yachts is a family-owned charter company based at Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola.

We have operated in the BVI since 1996 and intentionally maintain a much smaller fleet than the largest, international charter companies.  Our experience is that focusing on a fleet of ~25 yachts allows us to provide a higher level of care to our yachts and personalized customer service to our clients. 

One of the most significant differences between Virgin Charter Yachts and our largest powercat competitors is that we are not tied to a single yacht manufacturer.

Our BVI bareboat power catamaran fleet includes yachts built by manufacturers such as:

• Fountaine Pajot
• Leopard
• Aventura
• Aquila

This is particularly important because power catamarans from different manufacturers can be dramatically different even when they are approximately the same length.

An Aquila 54, Leopard 53, Aventura 50 and Fountaine Pajot MY6 are all large power catamarans, but their cabin layouts, flybridges, interior spaces, handling characteristics and overall designs are very different.

When clients are asking about the best yacht for charter, we are able to start with the guest and their needs, rather than the manufacturer.

Instead of saying:

"Here are the three sizes of powercat we offer."

We can ask:

"How many couples are traveling? How many private double cabins do you actually need? What features matter to you?"

Then we can recommend the model that makes the most sense for your specific group. 

Why Cabin Configuration Matters More Than Maximum Capacity

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of choosing a BVI bareboat.

A yacht advertised as sleeping 10 people does not necessarily have five private double cabins.

• It might have four cabins plus a convertible salon.
• It might have four conventional guest cabins plus a bunk cabin.
• It might include a forepeak berth accessed from the deck.

All of those arrangements can work extremely well for the right group - but they are very different vacations.

For five couples traveling together, for example, five separate cabins with five double beds are usually much more desirable than four traditional couples' cabins plus bunks.

That is one reason our Aventura powercats have become particularly popular with larger groups.

Our five-cabin Aventura 50 and Aventura 56 powercats provide five separate double-bed guest cabins for up to five couples.

For an even larger group, our Aventura 50 Unwinding provides an extraordinary six cabins, six double beds and six heads, accommodating up to 12 guests without using a convertible salon or bunk cabin to reach that capacity.

That kind of layout simply isn't available in every powercat fleet.

2. The Moorings

Best for: A very large international charter company, Leopard-based fleets and a highly standardized charter experience

The Moorings is one of the most recognizable yacht charter brands in the world.

Its Tortola operation is substantial, with over 300 bareboat yachts, and guests can choose from sailing monohulls, sailing catamarans and power catamarans.

The Moorings also has charter operations in numerous destinations worldwide, which can be attractive to travelers who charter frequently and like dealing with one international company.

Its scale provides obvious advantages.

• There are large reservation systems, established procedures, substantial charter-base infrastructure and a high degree of standardization.
• The primary distinction for powercat shoppers is the fleet itself - The Moorings powercat fleet is based around Robertson & Caine/Leopard power catamarans.
• Leopard makes excellent powercats, and Virgin Charter Yachts manages Leopard powercats as well in their fleet

The difference is choice.

With The Moorings, your powercat decision primarily becomes which Leopard-based Moorings model fits you; the 464 or the 53PC

At Virgin Charter Yachts, Leopard is one of several manufacturers you can compare.

A Major Difference for Groups of 10

This becomes especially important when you reach five couples.

The Moorings currently does not offer a five-cabin bareboat power catamaran in its principal BVI power fleet.

Its larger powercat models still use four-cabin configurations.

That does not necessarily mean they cannot accommodate more than eight people.

Some powercats can accommodate additional guests through convertible salon sleeping areas or other berths.

But that is very different from providing five equivalent private double cabins.

The Moorings does offer sailing catamarans with five cabins, so groups wanting five cabins can find options if they are willing to sail.

For travelers who specifically want a power catamaran with five private cabins for five couples, however, this difference becomes extremely important.

3. MarineMax Vacations

Best for: Guests who specifically want an Aquila power catamaran

MarineMax Vacations is another major BVI powercat operator.

Its powercat fleet is strongly centered around Aquila Power Catamarans.

Aquila has become one of the most prominent powercat manufacturers in the world, and its larger yachts offer tremendous interior and exterior volume.

If you already know you want an Aquila, MarineMax should certainly be part of your comparison.

Again, however, the primary difference is manufacturer choice.

MarineMax essentially says:

"Which Aquila best fits your group?"

Virgin Charter Yachts can instead compare Aquila power catamarans with Leopard, Aventura and Fountaine Pajot.

We actually manage Aquila powercats ourselves, so choosing VCY does not mean deciding against Aquila - it means Aquila is one of the many choices we offer.

MarineMax and Five-Cabin Powercats

Unlike The Moorings, MarineMax does have a large five-cabin powercat option.

The MarineMax 545/Aquila 54 can accommodate a large group and is an impressive yacht.

But here again, you need to look beyond the number "five cabins."

The fifth guest cabin in the Aquila 54 configuration uses bunk-style beds rather than another conventional double bed.

That layout can be excellent for families.

For example:

• Two parents occupy a primary cabin.
• Two other couples take queen cabins.
• Children or teenagers use the bunk room.

That's an excellent use of the design, but five adult couples may evaluate it differently.

For five couples, our Aventura 50 and Aventura 56 layouts provide five double-bed cabins, making the accommodation considerably more equal.

For six couples, Unwinding goes one step farther with six double cabins.

The lesson is simple:

Don't count cabins. Count beds.

And determine who is going to sleep in each one.

4. Horizon Yacht Charters

Best for: Sailors who prefer an established independent Caribbean charter operator

Horizon Yacht Charters has been part of the Caribbean charter industry for more than three decades and operates from Nanny Cay Marina.

Horizon has traditionally had a strong sailing focus, offering both monohulls and sailing catamarans.

For travelers primarily interested in sailing rather than power, Horizon deserves serious consideration.

Like Virgin Charter Yachts, Horizon provides an alternative to the very large corporate charter model. They are a small, boutique charter company that focuses of providing a high level of customer service to their guests. 

Guests who value a smaller operation and local BVI knowledge may find that approach appealing.

5. TMM Yacht Charters

Best for: Bareboat sailing catamarans and an established BVI-focused operation

TMM is another longstanding name in the BVI yacht charter industry.

Its fleet is strongly oriented toward bareboat sailing catamarans and includes yachts from multiple manufacturers including Lagoon and Fountaine Pajot. 

For someone searching specifically for a sailing cat rather than a powercat, TMM can provide a good balance between fleet variety and the service of a BVI-focused charter company.

6. BVI Yacht Charters

Best for: Sailors wanting broad monohull and sailing-catamaran choices

BVI Yacht Charters is another long-established Tortola operator.

One of the company's strengths is sailing-yacht variety.

While much of the BVI charter industry has shifted heavily toward catamarans, BVI Yacht Charters continues to provide monohull choices in addition to sailing catamarans.

For sailors who genuinely love sailing a monohull rather than simply using a yacht as a floating vacation home, that distinction matters.

7. Conch Charters

Best for: Traditional BVI sailors and guests looking for a smaller independent charter operation

Conch Charters has also been part of the BVI charter landscape for decades.

Its fleet is focused predominantly on sailing yachts, making it another good company to investigate if a traditional sailing bareboat is your priority.

Like several of the independent operators, Conch offers a very different experience from booking through a huge international charter organization.

Conch also offers some entry level size options as well as some older yachts, so they are known for having some of the most competitive prices for first time charters.  Conch has been known for decades for their slogan 'the best deals on keels.' 

Which BVI Bareboat Company Is Best for a Power Catamaran?

For powercats, we believe the most meaningful comparison is between Virgin Charter Yachts, The Moorings and MarineMax Vacations.

All three can provide excellent BVI powercat vacations.

The biggest structural difference is this:

• The Moorings: Primarily Leopard-based powercats.
• MarineMax Vacations: Primarily Aquila powercats.
• Virgin Charter Yachts: Leopard, Aquila, Aventura and Fountaine Pajot powercats.

That variety allows Virgin Charter Yachts to match the yacht to the group rather than match the group to one manufacturer's offerings.

Which Company Is Best for Four Couples?

Four couples have plenty of choices.

A four-cabin Leopard 51 or Leopard 53 may be ideal, or an Aquila 50 or 545. 

Other four-cabin powercats can work equally well.

At this group size, your priorities may become flybridge design, yacht age, equipment, pricing and personal preference rather than simply cabin count.

Which Company Is Best for Five Couples?

This is where the differences become larger.

Five couples ideally need:

• Five private cabins.
• Five double beds.
• And preferably five heads.

A yacht that technically "sleeps 10" is not necessarily configured that way.

Virgin Charter Yachts offers Aventura 50 and Aventura 56 powercats specifically configured with five double-bed guest cabins.

MarineMax offers the five-cabin Aquila 54/545, although one of the five cabins uses bunk beds.

The Moorings does not currently offer a five-cabin powercat option in its BVI bareboat powercat fleet.

For five adult couples who specifically want power rather than sail, these cabin differences should be one of the first things you compare.

Which Company Is Best for Six Couples?

Six couples present an even more difficult challenge.

You need six legitimate guest cabins if everyone wants comparable privacy.

Virgin Charter Yachts' Aventura 50 Unwinding provides:

• Six guest cabins.
• Six double beds.
• Six en-suite heads.
• Capacity for 12 guests.

There is no need to convert the salon every night or assign one couple to bunk beds.

For a group of six couples specifically looking for a BVI bareboat powercat, this is an exceptionally unusual configuration.

Big Company or Boutique BVI Charter Company?

Beyond the boats, think about the type of company you want standing behind your vacation.

Large international charter companies provide significant advantages - they offer tremendous brand awareness, standardized systems, large reservation departments and operations in multiple countries.

Smaller BVI companies operate differently. At Virgin Charter Yachts, our reservations team, base team and technical team are all connected to the same relatively small fleet - we know the individual yachts.

That matters because charter yachts are not rental cars.

Two yachts of the same model and year can still have different equipment, different upgrades and different layouts.

Personal knowledge of the actual yacht can be extremely valuable when helping a guest choose.

Should You Book Direct or Through a Charter Broker?

Many BVI bareboats appear on numerous websites.

That doesn't mean all those websites manage the yacht.

Independent charter brokers can sell yachts operated by other charter companies.

There is nothing inherently wrong with using a broker.

But when you book directly with the company that manages the yacht, you have direct access to the people responsible for preparing and supporting it.

Questions to Ask Before Booking Any BVI Bareboat

Regardless of which company you choose, ask more than:

"How much is the yacht?"

Ask:

• How many actual guest cabins are there?
• How many have double beds?
• Does the advertised capacity rely on a convertible salon?
• Are any guest berths in forepeaks?
• Does every cabin have its own head?
• What equipment is aboard this specific yacht?
• Who maintains the yacht?
• Who provides technical support during the charter?
• What fees are mandatory?
• What is included in the quoted rate?
• Who will I contact if I need help while I'm on the water?

Those answers frequently reveal more than the charter company's name.

So, What Is the Best BVI Bareboat Charter Company?

There isn't one company that is best for every charterer.

If you specifically want a Leopard and prefer a huge global organization with locations all over the world, The Moorings may make perfect sense.

If you want an Aquila and prefer the MarineMax ecosystem, MarineMax Vacations may be a strong choice.

If you want a sailing monohull, companies such as Horizon, BVI Yacht Charters or Conch may have options that VCY simply doesn't offer.

But if you want a BVI power catamaran and would rather compare several manufacturers, layouts and cabin configurations before deciding, Virgin Charter Yachts has a significant advantage.
